starting KDE from kdm restarts X

I'm having a problem strating KDE from kdm.

first, on my new installation, kdm did not have kde in the menu, so I probulated the kdmrc until it did.

then I tried to login through kdm and it then brings up the splash, finishes, sys "loading the desktop" or whatever is last, then a white rectangle refreshes over the upper left corner of the screen and X resets bringing me back to kdm.

I can't log in as any user

I can launch KDE by "startx -e startkde" or whatever that darn command was....

if it helps at all, I was in the middle of a emerge of both KDE and gnome and ran out of disk space, but KDE had finished already... The package was listed as installed. Could part of it not be finished like the config?

also, what are these _cfg_?? files I keep hearing about and where are they kept? they sound interesting.

First, the _cfg_-files:
If you already had a config-file that should be installed by the new package, the new one will be renamed to .cfg_xxxx_yyyy and put in the directory where the file should go to.
So, if you have a file $KDEDIR/share/config/kdmrc and _then_ install KDE, the new kdmrc will be renamed to .cfg_0001_kdmrc so that your file won't get affected.

Now the real problem:
I had the same problem and found, that this happens if the PATH-variable isn't set correctly.

I simply added
source /etc/profile
to the startkde-script in $KDEDIR/bin
