Having problem starting gnome with sawfish. /etc/rc.conf contains GDM as the displaymanager and "Sawfish" as the XSESSION.
I start gdm using "/etc/init.d/xdm"... the login prompt comes up... I enter username and password, press enter. A few screen flashes later, the login prompt comes back. There are no errors in /var/log/XFree86.0.log
I'm using NVIDIA GeForce 2 GTS with the "nvidia" kernel package and glx. |

Can you log in as root? If so, you might fix your problem by setting the sticky bit on your /tmp directory - it's in the FAQ. |

i'm logging in as root and running /etc/init.d/xdm manually.
gdm login screen comes up. I login as a regular user. I now get a blue screen (wallpaper) and nothing happens. I can move the mouse.
/tmp already has sticky bit, but just in case; i ran `chmod 1777 /tmp` |

Hi!
Two things to look into
1. a pam issue, check the gdm entry under /etc/pam.d/ and make sure it is up to date with the latest from gnome-base/gdm/files/gdm-2.2.5/
2. make sure that the gconf files and subdirectories under /etc are readable by your user

Tod,
1. i did a diff between /usr/portage/gnome-base/gdm/files/2.2.5/pam.d/gdm and /etc/pam.d/gdm => no difference.
2. all are readable. |

Hi!
Ok, two more things
1. Ctrl-Alt-F1 after trying to login as user and see if there are any useful error messages on that console.
2. Might be a .gnome-errors (or something to that effect, my memory is failing me ) file in your home directory that you can check also

FYI:
Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back
Ctrl-Alt-F{2-6} to do something useful from a shell, like kill gdm |

didn't see any useful error messages.
I just found out I can also run "startx" as a regular user. This gives me gnome and sawfish.
Still can't login via gdm. |

How do I correctly add Sawfish to gdms list of sessions? |
