[SOLVED] Downgrading glibc ?

  • Quote

Post by Devport » Wed Dec 17, 2008 6:33 pm

Has anybody ever downgraded glibc and if so how ? glibc-2.9 breaks a lot of stuff and I would like to double check that it is glibc-2.9 which breaks xauth ( gksu / X over ssh ).

Downgrading glibc is never recommended and is unsupported. I think usually reinstall is preferred.

Portage won't let it happen. I suppose there is some way to circumvent that process, but I wouldn't do it.

I entered emerge -C glibc once, just for giggles (with the <ctrl> pressed, and my other finger sitting just on top of the "C"). Portage told me it was a dumb idea, and shut down. Saved from myself yet again!

Blessed be!

Thanks for the hints - modifying the ebuild and downgrading worked fine ( glibc-2.9 -> glibc-2.8 ).

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I was bitten by this bug and have been tearing my hair out trying to figure out what caused it. Now I know. Great. So, for safety's sake, I just wanted to verify:
All I need to do is
1) mask glibc-2.9 until further notice and
2) comment out the downgrade check in the glibc-2.8 ebuild

Is any of the LDPATH stuff as outlined at http://www.gentoo-wiki.info/Downgrade_Glibc necessary? Have you experienced any serious breakages, caveats, etc?

Cheers,
Wyatt

That is what I did and it worked fine - I did not tweak LDPATH. Do a quickpkg glibc first.

It failed oddly early in for me (something about eblits), but I noticed when investigating that there was a newer version. I figured things could only improve, so I tried it: glibc-2.9_p20081201-r2 seems to actually play nicely with xauth. Due to upgrade cycle snafu, both machines have this version, but I might tentatively venture that this bug is closed. Thank you for your quick reply, however!

Cheers,
Wyatt
