|

Hi all.
The other day i decided to dust off my old Ultra5s and install Gentoo so I could do some SETI on them or something. Seeing DistCC in action with my Ultra60 would be fun too but I digress. Basically I've set up Gentoo on the more powerful of the two (well, to the point of being able to do stuff at the command line) and I'm too lazy to do the second just now. How easy is it to copy an install from one machine to the other?
I assume it would be as easy as booting a minimal live cd and issuing the following:
Code: | mkdir /mnt/drive1
mkdir /mnt/drive2
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/drive1
mount /dev/hdb1 /mnt/drive2
cp -r /mnt/drive1/* /mnt/drive2/*
|
Then booting the second drive in the second machine and changing the host name.
Both drives are partitioned exactly the same and I made sure I compiled drivers for both machines into the kernel (there are very minor hardware differences between the machines - CPU, RAM and graphics)
Personally I can see this working no problem. I just don't know if there would be any problems with things like permissions, hidden directories etc.
Input greatly appreciated.

use cp -ax /mnt/drive1/* /mnt/drive2/* to preserve file permissions and copy hidden files etc
also, as well as changing the hostname on the 2nd machine, edit /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and remove the line(s) pertaining to the ethernet adapter(s) in the first machine. Don't forget to install grub, or whatever your boot manager is, to the second disk too!! |
