im currently on my 6th gentoo install. every install is an adventure. i think its time for me to stop being so anal & just try to fix wutever probs i have then to just start over. yes, being unemployed gives u lots of time.
my question is:
i added vga=791 to my menu.lst & it worked for me but recently when i have that option in my menu.lst. after a reboot i get a blank screen after it past grub.
eg:
kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda3 hdc-ide-scsi vga=791
after 2 install & a bunch of kernel re-compile i figured it out. i took out vga=791 & everything worked fine. am i missing something in my kernel that is causing vga=791 not to work?
my hardware:
Dell Latitude C800
512MB Ram
16MB ATI Rage128 M4 Mobility
20gb HDD
DVD
CDRW

Just out of curiousity, what is that option supposed to do? If it works without that option, you could certainly just leave it like that. I generally don't stare at my grub menu screen. I'm normally tapping the enter key so it will get to the good part. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

Is vga=791 a framebuffer mode if so, make sure you have framebuffer support in the kernel.
Try using different modes as well. _________________ There's someone in my head but it's not me - Pink Floyd |

It sets the framebuffer to 1024x768x16b.

Make sure 'Video mode selection support' is enabled in the kernel. Also I've found that when I enable the nVidia Framebuffer support for my nVidia card I have no video. Try just using the VESA framebuffer.
