In Debian, you can give apt-get additional sources from which to check for applications to install.

In a similar manner, why not have the same for Gentoo?

The only essential feature needed are already there; overlay directories.

Code:
# vim /etc/make.conf
-----------------------------------------------------
# alternate rsync servers
bmg rsync.breakmygentoo.net /usr/portage/local/bmg/
-----------------------------------------------------

# emerge --sync bmg

Much easier than having to download stuff manually from BMG or indeed anywhere else. It would also make it really simple for the Gentoo devs to have an automatic 'development' repository that people could delve into.

Great idea. Now the only thing which is missing are good people willing to spend time and sweat working on Portage. Looking at the changelogs the number of commits to Portage's code is dramatically low.

Looking at distrowatch.com Gentoo is one of the most popular distributions. But it seems somehow that Gentoo's polularity among python developers with time (and will to improve Portage) is near zero. It's a pity.

Before this could work BMG had to provide an rsync server (or do they already provide it ??). And you don't reall need support for it in portage, you can use rsync directly (it's only one command after all, grep /usr/bin/rsync /usr/lib/portage/bin/rsync to get the one for the normal PORTDIR). I don't think you want the cache regeneration step everytime you check BMG for a new ebuild.

Agreed! I mean, it can take up to 10 minutes on my 733mhz/256meg celeron machine. What does it do anyway?

We don't provide it right now simply because we don't have the bandwidth resources, tho I'd be more than willing to set one up if mirrors could be found...
