trinity root # emerge -u world
Calculating world dependencies ...done!
!!! Error: the gnome-base/gnome-core package conflicts with this package and both can't be installed on the same system together.

Anyone able to point me in the right direction?
Thanks |

Sounds like you have Gnome 1.4 installed currently and it is trying to update you to Gnome2 (since you asked for a world update.) You might want to read up on how to go from a working 1.4 to a working 2 of Gnome. It is fairly well covered in the forums by spider (the guy who wrote the gnome 2 ebuild.)

Nope..... I *was* running gnome 1.4, and since then moved to gnome 2 (basically as soon as it was released...). Gnome 2 had been working fine (although that is relative, I'm pretty dissappointed with it) |

Hmmm... even after "emerge rsync" I'm still getting the same issue - this didn't happen until gnome 2.0.1 came out...? Anyone else seen this / figured out how to fix it? |

Check this forum thread out, I think you should be able to get up and running from the info in there. Long story short just unmerge the gnome-base/gnome-core and then re-emerge gnome (or do your update as you have been trying to do)
