The forum web server is a Dell PowerEdge 2650. It can use up to six modules of up to 2GB each, with an appropriate BIOS version, of DDR 266 (PC 2100) ECC Registered SDRAM. Presently all of the slots are occupied by four 256MB modules and two 512MB modules.

how much is the ram if we were to max it out? (like 2 gb x 6 right?)

The problem is that the web server only has 2gb of ram... we started a post in OTW (linked above) trying to raise money for more ram.

By all appearances, they would.

There is a link on http://www.gentoo.org/ to make donations via PayPal. As for a physical address, that could be somewhat more complicated, I can try to gather the appropriate information if you want it.

I've changed the code in the place where it was running out of memory so that it shouldn't run out of memory any more. You may have gotten an intermittent "Could not delete old search id sessions" error but this should now be fixed so you should not see that error again.

As a result of the changes searches seem a lot quicker (which was totally planned *cough*) which is always good :)

Whatever you did, seems to have also fixed the issue with paging through search results. Used to be that you could only go four or five pages into the results before getting hit with an "No results matched your search criteria" (or something to that effect). I just paged through 29 pages of unanswered posts without any trouble at all.

All hail our forums code monkey overlord! :D

EDIT: I spoke too soon it seems... :(

I got the following error:
Quote:
phpBB : Critical Error

Error clearing sessions table

When trying to open this thread: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-698295-highlight-.html

Edit2: A refresh cleared it up.

much faster searches, and no issues yet...

still interested in more ram? it seems amazing that 2gb can handle the major traffic of these forums... especially with all that PHP running...

something about clearing sessions tables?

what;s up with that?

it's not a major inconvenience... but it's still there, and that worries me.

As I stated above, if you hit refresh when you get this error, it should then work. At least refreshing once has resolved it the four times that I've run into it since tomk made his change.
