My first time to install gentoo. Got a working Ultra 60 with a fresh 4GB drive.
Booted using gentoo livecd 2.4.31-sparc.
Followed the Gentoo Linux SPARC Handbook online.
Reached until step 6. Installing the Gentoo Base System.
6.a. Chrooting - when I encountered a FATAL error, kernel too old
Code:
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
FATAL: kernel too old
Unimplemented SPARC system call 188

I am using stage3-sparc64-2007.0.tar.bz2 and portage-20080416.tar.bz2.

In my make.conf, CHOSTS="sparc-unknown-linux-gnu" (this was the default).

Can somebody direct me to the next move? Thank you so much.

What CD are you using? I would suggest using 2007.0 Minimal or 2008.0_beta1 Minimal.

I'm using an old livecd 2.4.31 for sparc to boot.

Can any workaround be done as I currently don't have access to cd writer to create a new boot cd?
This old livecd allows me to access and download (via links) from the internet though.
I have in fact downloaded the install-sparc64-universal-2008.0.iso in preparation.

Thanks.

The 2007.0 stage has glibc-2.5, which requires a 2.6 kernel (also, 2.4 kernels aren't supported anymore by Gentoo/SPARC).
As Simba7 said, download 2007.0 LiveCD (or the netboot image from agaffney's page) and you'll be fine.

HTH.

Thank you for all your help, especially simba7, mark_alec, tchunha, and patrickoneal.

I managed to burn the ISO to CD (and a friend also gave me the LiveCD).
However got busy with another project lately and got only a couple of hours to play with my Ultra60 in a week.

If I install up to step 7/8 and have to shut down for the night, can I just start where I took off? Need to backtrack?

Sure. Just mount the partitions (and filesystems such as /proc) and chroot into the new environment.
