Running Gentoo Linux on a USB drive! A small drive that you can carry everywhere with youand just plug it in and boot! It would be absolutely easy to do that, just a couple of hours, I say :D

So? You want your Gentoo running on a USB Pendrive? Here's how you do it, exactly how you do it...
Quote:

    Format Drive as ext2/ext3 filesystem

    Boot in livecd

Mount both filesystems to approcriate places

    cp -pr /mnt/<gentoofs> /mnt/<usbdrivefs>

The parameter -p is to preserve the file attributes(owner, permissions, etc.) and - r is to copy folder heirarchies

Now open the /etc/fstab in your usb stick, and edit the necessary

Once that is done, install GRUB on the disk,
Run "grub" in the shell as root

Once the GRUB Shell has loaded, type "root(hdX,X)" where "X" is your pendrive properties

Then, to complete the installation type "setup(hdX)"

    Reboot and test!

In the above I've used "root(hdX,X)", and "setup(hdX)". Replace X with your partition, eg: my pendrive is known as sda1 on partition 1, so for GRUB it would be "root(hd1,0)", "setup(hd1)". "hd1" is said as i have my cpu harddisk as well, so the USB drive would be known as "hd1".

That should get you going, if you have any questions, post them here. But you have to be carefull of the system! Since the system is running on a pendrive, or whatever you call it, it can frequently tend to damage the filesystem if not shutdowned properly!!! I faced just the same thing on my first crash! So I warn YOU...

Hey jude was just wondering.

Do you notice that Gentoo boots up faster or slower this way? If its faster, is it significantly faster? Was thinking of doing this for my mythtv box.

Yes! I do see gain in speed!
On my hdd, i have to wait for 30 seconds for my desktop to load completely whereas on the pendrive, I only have to wait 10 seconds. Not only that, it boots up also fast. :)

Thanks for this thread! I hadn't realized how simple it was to get a pen drive working.

Sorry to thread crap, but another thing you could try to speed up application load times and boot time is using squashfs+aufs for your root. See http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-646289.html for more details.

Sounds like a cool idea! But, what if you want to use it say at work or someone else's home and they don't have Grub or a Grub option. Can it be booted from start? And, what is the life span of a stick drive? I was told that a stick drive burns out pretty fast if used all the time... Be nice to have though! 8)

sneakerski, thanks for that, I'll be implementing that and so, if you have a pendrive of less space, you could squashfs!!! I had that idea, but did'nt know how to do it exactly.... Thanks for that again!!!

loosing_sanity, if you do that part of grub install, it has it's own grub boot sectors built then. Also if you plug it in another machine, if the BIOS supports boot from usb, then I'll start directly with grub... as for the lifespan, i'm still working to see it, but most proably it will live for about a year or so with continuous use.

Here's the first Question that came in my mind, "What if i go to an old machine that the BIOS does not support boot from USB, then?". I think that making an emergency grub install cd would do that.... Here's how you do it:

open a shell, and do the following
You can make the name of the folder whatever you want, i used "iso"
Code:
$ mkdir iso

Then make the grub directory
Code:
$ mkdir -p iso/boot
$ mkdir -p iso/boot/grub

Copy everything from /boot/grub
Code:
$ sudo cp -pr /boot/grub/* iso/boot/grub

Your almost done!
What was the main important thing in the above step is that you need the "stage2_eltorito" file, but if you want splash, etc., you would want all the files also
Then, make the image bootable
Code:
$ mkisofs -R -b boot/grub/stage2_eltorito -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -o grub.iso iso

Burn the disk, and test!

What if you are worried about the limited write cycles of a flash drive?
Is there a way to boot off of a squashfs or other similarly compressed system?
Can you even make an image of / ?
Should the filesystem use 1mb blocks or 4kb blocks, since usb random access is fast?

hey, sorry about that very long delay. I had gone away from here for 3 whole mounths.
BTW , to answer you, when the write cycles get over, your drive will stop functioning! also if your friend does not have grub, if at the BIOS config you choose to boot from the usb, it will start grub.

if i understand well, that procedure makes a live usb install.

would it support installing my own favorite applications or
would i have to reinstalling them again each time i boot
(like a livecd) ? if so, how to really install gentoo on a
4gb usb stick ? the same than on a regular hard drive ?

the concept of a usb install is that it acts as a mini-harddrive, except much faster. The apps that you install, will get installed on the usb drive and everytime you boot, it is just how you have left it the last time. For a clean Gentoo install, connect your usb stick before you put your pc on so that the BIOS recognises it as a drive. Boot the live cd and install it the same way as you did your harddrive install, only using a partition on your usb drive as root filesystem. It should install grub but if it does not(as it may recognise that grub is installed on your hdd), follow the procedure that i have posted. :D

so one could do a minimal install with only the necessary applications and then copy the gentoo filesystem to the usb filesystem and that way have his own favourite os and programs with him all the time? but how about the architecture of the system? for example what if he has used in the kernel some options about intel cpu and he wants to boot from an amd cpu? or what if he has used some cflags specific to his architecture?

I am just working on something like this.

Quote:

Yes. I am trying it with usbstick -> luks -> squashfs as root.

You will likely have to think of this beforehand and build your system with eg. generic i686. Also you probably should include a lot of drivers like the livecd.

Hi,

Trying to install Gentoo on a usb hard drive, here's my /boot/grub/grub.conf:
Code:

default 0
timeout 30
splashimage=(hd1,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Gentoo Linux 2.6.24-r8
root (hd1,0)
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.24-gentoo-r8 root=/dev/sda3 video=uvesafb:mtrr:3,ywrap,1024x768-32@60

It boots on the drive but can't go further, reports the following error:
Code:

root (hd1,0)
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.24-gentoo-r8 root=/dev/sda3 video=uvesafb:mtrr:3,ywrap,1024x768-32@60
Error 17: Cannot mount select partition
Press any key to continue

But grub seems to recognize correctly the partitions:
Code:

grub> geometry (hd1)
drive 0x81: C/H/S = 14593/255/63, The number of sectors = 234441648, /dev/sda
Partition num: 0,  Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
Partition num: 1,  Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x82
Partition num: 2,  Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83

Any hint?
Thanks

Probably the kernel takes the first hard disk in your system as sda and not your usb-disk.

Try using genkernel with real_root=LABEL=label-of-sda3 or real_root=UUID=uuid-of-sda3

Good remark, I'm quite surprised but it seems to be true:
Code:

grub> geometry (hd0)
drive 0x80: C/H/S = 7296/255/63, The number of sectors = 117210240, /dev/hda
[b]Partition num: 0,  Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7[/b]
Partition num: 1,  Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
Partition num: 2,  Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x82
Partition num: 3,  Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83

Grub seems to point to the MS windows partition of the internal hdd instead of pointing to the external hdd.

But I specified "root (hd1,0)" in grub.conf, I'd be glad if I could avoid the use of genkernel.

Ok, when setting the BIOS to boot on the USB, Grub sees the external usb disk as HD0, so now i changed the grub.conf and it boots and starts loading the kernel.
But it ends up in a kernel panic saying:
Code:

Cannot open root device "sda3" or unknown-block(2,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
hda1
hda2
hda3
hda4

sda1
sda2
sda3
Kernel panic, etc...

So, it sees sda3 but doesn't want to set it as root partition...
Any hint appriciated.

Well it seems strange, since it already knows sda3.

You could try use root_delay=10 as kernel-parameter to wait 10 seconds before trying to mount root.

EDIT: or even rootwait.

rootwait option made it! The system boots now, thanks giessie!

Any explanation appriciated.

That is likely because the kernel image on your pen drive is likely smaller than the custom one you installed on your hard drive. I can't completely verify this, but I would guess based on the size of the gentoo liveCD image, that the kernel image isn't big. ;)

You wouldn't want to bet on this...

IMO, it's faster, because the average access time of the flash drive is like 10 times lower.

could someone tell me what is wrong with my kernel config ?
no sdx device is listed as a possible root partition when i get
a VFS error unable to mount root fs
while booting from my usb stick
sda1 is formatted in ext3 but is not listed

kernel is 2.6.16.60
and i gotta stick with this one for hostap purposes

Since you are booting from USB, you will want to have usb storage (or everyhing usb related for that matter) compiled in. If I saw correctly, in your config it is set as module.

You may also need some delay to give the kernel a chance to recognize the stick. I have one that takes up to 20 seconds until I see the device nodes.
