Hi there, I've been around Linux for a while - but don't compile my kernel much. However, I'm having problems with my USB & I get the feeling that I'm in for many compiles to get it fixed. I compile with

make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install

Which has the side effect of removing my nVidia and ALSA drivers :(
What should I do to let my drivers (which are modules) survive a kernel re-compile?

Cheers
Brad

You really should recompile these drivers after a new kernel to avoid any symbol errors. Just compile and install your new kernel, restart, then re-emerge alsa-drivers and nvidia-kernel. Works for me.

My understanding is that the drivers rely on the kernel at compile time. I don't believe there is another way.

Somebody, (and by "somebody" I mean "I think it was delta407") wrote an init script that checks for a new kernel and re-compiles vmware, nvidia, and alsa modules if needed.

Might want to get ahold of him...
