I have a white iBook g3 (dual USB rev2 with 300MB something RAM) that I'm trying to put Linux on. I've tried both Fedora and Ubuntu/Xubuntu but they're both slower than a turtle that's been dead for a few weeks. I haven't tried yellow dog, and I'm installing the latest Debian for kicks at the moment, but Gentoo sounded like the better option since each install is essentially built for that system. I'm not looking for a powerhouse, in fact I only need it to play some of the gnome games, and other simple ones really - the Gnome Basic Desktop Install from the HOWTO Install Gentoo - From Stage1 on an iBook G3 wiki seems ideal.

I've tried downloading both the 2007.0 and 2006.1 install discs only to have them hang and force a restart. For the longest time I just assumed I was doing something wrong, so after many different CD burns and options enabled/disabled during install I finally stumbled upon this: install-ppc-universal-2007.0 doesn't boot on G3 iBook

2005.1 boots fine. But the 2006.1 stops at hdparm /dev/hda. I also tried with nodetect option.

I can attest that the minimal install discs fail as well.

I haven't tried the 2008 betas, but since a 2005.1 disc at least seems confirmed to work I was just wondering if someone has an old one lying around they could post a download link for, or create a torrent for demonoid or...something. I'd say that while I've progressed past the n00b stage, I still don't know all that much so any reply can't be to verbose.

It's less of a goal or project now, it's become more of a personal quest if you will. I will not let myself be defeated by this.

Actually, debian runs surprisingly smoothly. I just assumed it would be problematic because ubuntu was. As I said, more of a novice then n00b.

But I'd still like to play around with gentoo on my iBook g3 if it's possible.

We used to keep the old media in a historical folder on the mirrors, but it looks like that's gone now, sorry. It would be really good if you could try the new Beta discs, both of the issues with the older discs were kernel issues which should be resolved on the newer disc. If not, it would be good to know before we release. :)

I'm sorry, but I don't have access to the laptop anymore. Debian was working fine and I was donating it anyway.

I have a ibook G3, (white 14.1" screen)

2008.1 beta does not work either, although I've heard debian does so I'm on my way to try that.

Thanks for the link (even if I don't need it anymore). Can you update to the latest packages from this release?

And btw, debian does run butter smooth so far on the iBook.

sure, but it will probably take a lot of time and efforts from your side, many things have changed since 2005 ;)

cheers
