|
|
In the tty's, my keymap seems totally ruined. In X (e16), everything works as expected, in everything from xterms to firefox.
I have no idea where to look to find out if there is a setting for the tty keymap, so any pointers would be most welcome.
To give you an idea of what it's like working outside of X, this is how my standard norwegian (105-key I think) qwerty keyboard is mapped on the three rows of letters:
å,.pyfgcrl'~
aoeuidhtns-<

What's in your /etc/conf.d/keymaps file? |

Looks fine to me...
Code: | KEYMAP="no"
SET_WINDOWKEYS="no"
EXTENDED_KEYMAPS=""
DUMPKEYS_CHARSET="" |

Yes, that looks OK. Perhaps it's some weird compiled-in font set from the kernel...? If you are using framebuffer, that is. |

I don't think I am. But I'll check through my kernel config nonetheless. _________________

Ahh, dvorak. Learn to love it!
It's in many ways far, far better then qwerty.
Anyways... Try no-latin1? _________________ [Server etc. | C2D 2.2 @ 3.0 GHz / 4 GB RAM / 3x1 TB + 1x2 TB SATA disks + 1.5 TB ext. | Gentoo]

Dvorak? Looks just totally crazy to me...
Got this message when starting k3b just now, might it hint at something?
Code: | System locale charset is ANSI_X3.4-1968
Your system's locale charset (i.e. the charset used to encode filenames) is set to ANSI_X3.4-1968. It is highly unlikely that this has been done intentionally. Most likely the locale is not set at all. An invalid setting will result in problems when creating data projects.
Solution: To properly set the locale charset make sure the LC_* environment variables are set. Normally the distribution setup tools take care of this. |

I would have to agree with Jarjar... learn to love it I switched about half a year ago, and so far I haven't regretted it. Only people wishing to tamper with my laptop have been put off...
In case you're interested:
http://www.mwbrooks.com/dvorak/ is an okay resource to learn about the Dvorak layout
http://dvorak.tg90nor.net/ is a Norwegian effort to spread Dvorak - the layout is exactly the same is used in Danish Dvorak, so that's what I use when I miss the æ, ø and å.
http://gigliwood.com/abcd/lessons/ is a good tutor when just getting started - basically the slave work of getting used to the fingers not moving so much anymore, and not looking into the keyboard.
Otherwise google is your friend
There is a small tutor called dvorak7min that is good - gtypist also comes with Dvorak lessons
Check it out - I don't think you'll regret it. The only time I'd think Dvorak would be too hard to learn, would be if you already learned to touchtype, but most qwerty users don't |

This suddenly happened on one of my machines as well. I have three Gentoo boxes with the exact same keymap and locale configuration. The reason appears to be that the map "no" is ambigous, it exists both as /usr/share/keymaps/i386/dvorak/no.map.gz and /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty/no.map.gz. Narrowing the map to "qwerty/no" solves the problem. I'd love to know why kdb behaves differently on seemingly identical setups... |

I'm also a Dvorak/Svorak (Swedish version) user since about 4 or 5 years now. I've never looked back! Here's another great source of information for Dvorak, which also shatters some of the myths around it.
