I'm a current Slackware user and am very interested in installing Gentoo. The problem is that I'm limited to the LiveCD for a networkless install since my wireless card is not natively supported.

I've tried to install on two different machines and both do the same thing, so I'm pretty sure that I must be doing something wrong. I go into the GLI, answer all the questions, choose a minimal amount of GRPs, then click "install." I usually get a line or two of output saying that the root password was successfully set but then it doesn't do anything else; no harddrive or cd-rom activity whatsoever. I even left it for a few hours one time, but still to no avail.

Has anyone else experienced this, or am I just an idiot?

Thanks in advance.

Yes.

In fact, so many people experience this that I am surprised that the moderators have not made a "sticky" with the solution.

Just tell the installer that your network connection is already setup (even if it isn't).

Thanks! I did some searching to no avail. I guess I was using the wrong key terms. Thanks again for your help.

I am too facing such a problem.

My system is AMD 2600 64 bit sempron with ASUS motherboard.

I tried to install from the Gentoo live CD 2006 thorugh the graphical installer offline. I setup default packages and tried to install stage3 , after setting root password its showing

"Working...
Preparing..."

at the bottom.

Even after 1 hour no progress is shown

whats actually the status is it installing?

Ironically I experienced the same problem yesterday with the LiveCD. I just used the command line installer and made sure that I selected real installer rather than simulate. Also saving your profile (xml) might have something to do with it, just make sure you save it, I did /etc/installprofile.xml off the topic of my head. Good Luck :D

ps, Hey everybody, Im new to Gentoo, im finding the performance great so far (Hits outdated Debian on the head for its outdated packages for Desktop/Laptop support)

That fix didn't work for me. I tried that last night.

Actually, I had to tell the installer that my net connection was set up just to get past the network configuration screen. If I tried to set it static, it would tell me that one or more network devices wasn't configured yet. So clicking on "my network connection is already setup" got me past that. Then it freezes on the white (log) screen where it says the root password was set and the livecd password was set, but no further. I even let it go overnight with no progress.

I'm using the amd64 installcd.

Well, I haven't tried the command line, console installer. I've been wating for years for the gui installer and I'm a little disappointed I haven't been able to use any version of it since it came out. I'm going to try the command line one now.

The console installer wouldn't work for me either. I chose the safest settings I could. I decided to have it download GRPs (I think) so it wouldn't have to worry about compiling anything (or very little, at least). The installer crashed halfway through.

So I decided to just use the minimal CD. Now, I finally have a gentoo install. I'm having some trouble with that now, but that's for another thread.

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but I've spent a good 4 days installing this trial/error and I've done it successfully in commandline(with the help of the 80pg manual)

so I'm tried the GUI out once more. (I'm a sucker for pain)

In the FAQ, there is a command to update the installer:

* open a terminal
* /opt/installer/misc/updategtkfe

The speed is remarkably faster, the stability is noticable. Anyone who has not read the FAQ or tried this method should definately check it out. I have an AMD64-3200+ with 2gb RAM, it took less than 15 minutes for my system to compile (No extras yet.. I'm going to emerge the X11 etc stuff by commandline.)

Oh and one other thing..Just incase you DO get the failed startup still, save your setup profile before you hit that 'install' button. It'll save you a great deal of mouseclicks when you try again.

I have the install CD. I would *somehow* like to *extract* the stage3 tarball from this CD.
Would this be possible?

The /opt/installer/misc/updateglid method is working for me.

I had the same problem with using the live cd GUI installer (first time user of GUI for install done 2 installs prior years). I couldent get the live cd to set up the cheap wireless card (air link awcl3026) I guess it needs the nis wrapper? after install, I tried the networkless install off cd but got stuck at the update root password, pluged into the net and dhcpcd (use terminal oh so handy) brought up the network card right away, this time did the stage three down load and appears to be going well.
This cd finds everything on a toshiba satalight 2.6ghz laptop amazing!
thank you

Any luck with this problem? Were you able to install gentoo successfully?

Apologies: Apologies for my previous post. I guess I missed the obvious reply. I shall try it out ("tell the installer that, the network is already setup and working") and do let you know the status. You may please ignore my earlier posts.

Thanks

Thank you all. This worked beautifully.
Once again the solution is

-> tell the installer that the network is already setup (even when it is not so, as in my case:-))

I have the same problem.

I am using the LiveDvd. During gentoo boot my network card gets
detected and everything seems to be Ok, once gentoo is booted the
network doesn't always work.

When installing via the GLI it just stops on the preparation of stages.
Sometimes the progress bar reaches 100 % but the messagebox
window does not close and there it stays. I once left it for 4 hrs
with no change.

What seems to be causing this? I know I am trying to install the correct
version, that is the correct distro for my system.

I would prefer to install from the LiveDVD
as I am still a linux layman.

Thanks for any help and sorry for the long post.

Stops on the installer after partitioning and assigning /boot and /home to another partition than root.
When you say DONE he tries to mount the partitions and fails console and gtk+ version.

Urgent solution required because I am stuck now. Anyone in the area of Antwerp?
Also in the documentation read dhcpcd -HD ethx must be dhcpcd ethx and no parameter at all for nameserver and gateway to recieve. -HD is not supported anymore as it is default.

I'm now going to remove it as we stopped providing the GLI a long time ago.
