(i'm such a n00b.. hehe)

anyway, i'm using mplayer, and I have my x server running nicely with the nvidia accelerated drivers. i'm playing quake3, tuxracer, BillardGL, and everything is nice and fast on my pII 300 /w a gForce2

when i watch movies in mplayer, they're not generally very 'smooth' looking.

i've tried mplayer -vo gl/x11/gl2

and i have

Code:

vo = xv
gui = 1

in my config.

I want completely anti-aliased, billinear filtered looking video, but everything i've done looks like shit compared to the video's i've played on the same system when I had XP installed.

am I missing something?

dma enabled on the hard drive and dvd drive (if you're playing dvds?)
hdparm -d 1 /dev/hda (assuming your hard drive is hda)
hdparm -d 1 /dev/hdc (assuming your dvd drive is hdc)
there are other parameters you can pass hdparm that can increase speed alot
my default gentoo system gets about 5MBps throughput from the hard drive
with the hdparm setup I get 35MBps throughput... so its a nice kick in the pants.

I forgot to mention i'm using SCSI.

hdparm isn't supported for SCSI drives.

perhaps I phrased my post poorly, the frame rate is pretty good, the movies just look like they're being rendered in software mode...

is there a way to get mplayer to use filtering and anti-aliasing that comes with windows media player?

i think i recall mplayer's ./configure stating that anti-aliasing was 'no'.

i'll try re-emerging mplayer. because I emerged mplayer first, and then installed the accelerated drivers it's not taking advantage of my hardware... actually, that sounds really logical.... if that's the case sorry to have wasted your time...

What sort of movies (encoding type, quality, etc) are you looking at here? I've got a PII 450MHz w/ a GeForce 2, and all the movies I've looked at are fine on my system. I don't turn the gui on, though, maybe try turning that off? Do MPEGs work better than AVIs, etc?

Interestingly, I just took a look, and my .mplayer/config is entirely empty. So maybe my version is automatically using the best choices. Perhaps try blanking out that file?

Also, maybe try looking at 'em in xine or whatever. Maybe you *are* running up against some CPU hangup during the encoding. Games like Quake3, etc, typically use a heck of a lot more GPU than CPU nowadays (or so I'm led to believe). :)

yeah, you need the nvidia drivers installed before compiling mplayer. with them, mplayer will compile knowing they are there and the movies should be MUCH nicer
