I decided to try 2008.0 on two of my IBMs. I left 2007.0 on the one doing the server tasks, but decided to try out 2008.
After a full day of compiling and AMAZINGLY no compile errors, I have the following:

I was very surprised that this all installed with no compile errors. I may go ahead and upgrade the final PC. _________________ Greg

I use the 2008.0/desktop profile with my Thinkpad T60P and everthing is fine.
I use this since March 14 I think. _________________ Sysadmin of Funtoo-Québec.org

Remember, as of now, we are still in beta2 for 2008.0. The profiles have undergone a fair amount of change and are still being tested. I would encourage caution on your ppc64 servers if they are production. Otherwise, thanks for the positive report and keep on testing! Appreciate the feedback. _________________ -->

Yeah, I guess I should have referenced that. My PPC's are for recreational/educational mostly, so that's why I tried it on 2 of them. One of them I use for an answering machine, otherwise I use them to convert video or other longwinded jobs. No need to tie up the PC. I'm guessing 2008 will run mgetty/vgetty well enough so I'll probably upgrade on the third IBM soon.
If these were production boxes, I would have definitely waited. _________________ Greg |

Well, I finally found a compile failure. I decided to emerge evince. The process was half way through the dependencies when it failed on gnome-desktop-2.20.3.
#I did a revdep-rebuild requested by poppler-bindings and the second attempt of gnome-desktop compiled successfully.
Well, it looks like I spoke too soon. One IBM "appears" to have been successful, while the other one failed again, but in a slightly different place. ibm_right is apparently struggling with pygtk-2.12.0. It showing a lot of "Could not write function ... No ArgType for ..." messages.
ibm_slow failed on gnome-desktop again.
One of the dependencies of evince warned of having to set 'march' in CFLAGS. Is this really necessary?
Here's part of the ibm_slow error message.

I did finally find that it is a known issue. There's a bugzilla for it, but I didn't see any work arounds in the bug. It happens in 2.20.3 and in 2.22.1.

Where it says "SNIPPED OUTPUT" I cut errors that were so similar only a filename changed or something. If needed, I'll post the rest, but I felt it would clog the forums, especially since this appears to be a gnome issue rather than a PPC issue... _________________ Jarrett Lee

I've sleeped a few times since then, but I think there was a use flag that enabled it to finish. I may be wrong and I don't remember what the use flag was. _________________ Greg |

Would you post your use flags for gnome-desktop? Any in make.conf or in /etc/portage/package.use. Then I can compare mine. _________________ Jarrett Lee

I left the MAKEOPTS=-j1 in place and tried it one more time and it worked... Why? I have no idea, but I'm not complaining. Hopefully it'll work when I go to actually use it _________________ Jarrett Lee

I was remembering wrong. It was a use setting for vlc, which probably isn't relevant:

Shouldn't all the x86 problems be in an x86 forum?
I'm not sure the ppc forum is the best place to get help on it. _________________ Greg |

| I faced similar issues emerging gnome-desktop first and gucharmap today. Initially, I thought I had fixed it by emerging libxml2 (gnome-desktop went fine after that) but gucharmap only completed its installation after I set MAKEOPTS=-j1. Was the libxml2 thing a mere coincidence? Anyway, +1 from me for the -j1 solution. |

I would like to try and get back on topic with my posting on my install of 2008.0beta2 on my G4 1.33ghz 12" iBook
I had a few problems xac did not work so I emerged xserver and Xautoconfig and that worked great so now all is working well I hope to get my wireless working soon my PC laptop which also has Broadcom 43xx wireless works great so I hope it will go well on my mac. I will be installing 2008.0 on my clamshell when the final release comes out and I also have 2 G4 towers that I hope to install gentoo on when I have time. I decided to use xfce4 as it tends to use fewer resources but as with all GUI stuff I find it's all personal preference. I read a book one time about the early days of personal computers and people who used apple2's where called crippled because they had a desktop with icons and did not do everything from the command line my how time has changed or have they?

I still really haven't had any problems with packages in the "stable" branch. I haven't had many problems with ~testing either, only OOo. In fact, I'm running gcc 4.2.4 with -O3 and still not really having any problems.
The only time I use GUI on these things is with ssh tunneled X, which I even use some from work. Sometimes I need xterm for something that PuTTy can't quite do. _________________ Greg |
