Could try 'ifconfig eth0 media 10baseT' if your driver supports it?
Usually if the cable is really that bad that it won't autonegotiate a speed it still won't work even when forced to a lower speed... (that is, if autonegotiate works...) You can't really use silver satin untwisted cable for 10bT either. _________________ Core2Quad 9550S/4GB/4x500G RAID5/RadeonHD 5770

I too would like to know and what the solution really was.
I'm speculating he's trying to use "silver satin" cable, i.e. old telephone untwisted flat pair wire as ethernet cable because he couldn't find category 3 twisted pair wire. This has many undesirable issues to data integrity, so "downclocking" the data rate may allow data to pass with all the corruption that could occur from noise...
Please tell us what the solution was... _________________ Core2Quad 9550S/4GB/4x500G RAID5/RadeonHD 5770

My neighbour got twisted-pair cat.5 cable, it doesn't seem to work faster than 10Mb and he wants network access in linux in ugly way, instead of going to the nearest shop for solid patchcord. Blame him.
Anyway, thx for all.
Btw. I thought 'bout using old telephone cable cause my house is all wired with it. However, sometime ago it appeared that wireless phone changed the situation, but the all-around house network wired would still be nice. We'll see. _________________ ask first, #kill later... the more data you get :] |
