Guys it's terrible...
I had a 2005 installation on my laptop (amd64) and after two years i tried to refresh it. Of course it completely broke after emerging a couple of updates.
So i decided to install the latest version which (more than a month ago) was 2007.0. Then I encountered this:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=178512
Last post in that topic was: "This will be closed once 2007.1 is out.".
But the 2007.1 was cancelled
Concerning that the last version I would be able to install was launched in 2006( ) something is quite not right...
BTW: LiveCD 2007.0 was unable to launch GTK+ installer (though it correclty detected my radeon x200M). Old ubuntu (6.06) was able...
But i'll wait that month for 2008.0. Hope it's gonna be worth it... |

You could have waited with this....until enough seeds for bittorrent are out there and the file has propagated to the mirrors. |

ext4 is in the mainline (and gentoo sources) so it will be in 2008.0. At this point I am not sure reiser4 will ever be in the mainline so it is unlikely it will make an official gentoo release any time soon. _________________ John

I'd like to know if there is a possible way that,we install 2008 beta1, and the when the final stable version is out we are able to do an upgrade or do we have to do an installation again? |

With gentoo you never ever have to reinstall. And you never update using a cd or dvd. The purpose of the install cd is a one time install and then a recovery cd if you some how trash your boot. I have machines at work updated to the current (2008.0) that were installed only once using a 2004.0 live cd. _________________ John

and yet its vital to get new liveCD's out at a significantly faster rate for HW support. At this time, I have to use another distro to start the gentoo install process. _________________ HW problems. It's a VIA thing. |

Well, I've been having some problems lately with 2008.0. I'm doing a fresh install on my router and for some reason, pam-1.0.0 doesn't want to compile.
I'm still tinkering with it, though.. Might just have to revert to an older version. |

I believe that had something to do with an autotools upgrade or something. Check flameeyes blog, I think he had something on it. _________________ No Man is Just a Number!

Ya, I seen that.. I'm trying out pam-1.0.0-r1 as I post.
Also, is there a way to switch when glibc and gcc compile when doing a Stage1? I've noticed that gcc-4.2.3 doesn't want to compile before glibc does, but will compile after (doing a ./bootstrap with =gcc.4.2.2 then after it's finished, emerge 4.2.3).
Also, could someone trash the mktemp package already? It's in coreutils-6.10-r1. Basically, I have to unmerge mktemp, emerge coreutils, then do a emerge -e system. Still annoying, like compiling gcc twice (well, 3 if you include rebuilding system).
EDIT: Yep.. That worked..

Just a quick question... Those resolved bugs, will they only be available in the release version, or are there new (downloadable) builds after a bug is solved? _________________ Rowdy.nl |

Used the new install seems to be ALOT better then any of the old versions.
I had a bug with the partitioning section after I add the drive it just stays on next and locks up.
I restarted X a few times to get the partitioning the way i wanted to since is save what i was doing. nice
After that it was smooth sailing.
With this being a beta I expected there to be a few bugs. The installer sure makes life easy.
Keep up the GOOD WORK guys! |

Neither ipw3945 nor iwl3945 was workable, i think /etc/init.d/ipw3945d wasn't able to open a new pid /var/run/ for some bizzare reason. Will the release 2008.0 tarball have the newer version of coreutils so we don't have to fiddled with the coreutils/mktemp blocker? _________________

Nope, I wouldn't rely on that date. beta2 should be out soon, and the final will probably be as long after beta2 as beta2 is from beta1. |

However, they have to pack the utils to deal with it too (like mkfs), or it will be mostly useless. _________________ "I'm just very selective about the reality I choose to accept." -- Calvin |
