Hi fellow Gentoo'ers.

Lately my ISP have had trouble routing to american websites duo to trouble with a peering partner, so I am currently unable to connect to nice websites like gentoo-portage.com and gentoo-wiki.com. So I am unable to check use flag descriptions on the website. And couldn't really find any convenient way to get the descriptions for the use flags in a nice easy readable way. So I decided to throw together a script that utilized emerge (and eix on the side) together with the description files, to deliver these descriptions as easy as doing a eix or emerge search. And actually quite good performance.

So if you are interested in a Portage USE Flag descriptions "searcher", check it out at my blog: www.micdah.dk/2008/03/28/gentoo-portage-use-flag-descriptions/.

Here is an example screenshot to demonstrate: usef example.

Sorry I am linking, but a bit tirred, and kind of overkill to write the same stuff twice. ;)

Any response, suggestions, bug reports etc is welcome. :D

My suggestion is emerge gentoolkit, and run euse -i USE-FLAG-NAME

Code:

punkid@Genbox ~/Desktop $ time euse -i samba
global use flags (searching: samba)
************************************************************
[-    ] samba - Adds support for SAMBA (Windows File and Printer sharing)

local use flags (searching: samba)
************************************************************
no matching entries found

real    0m2.321s
user    0m1.259s
sys     0m0.203s

punkid@Genbox ~/Desktop $ time ./usef.sh samba
USE Flag search for 'samba' (net-fs/samba)
Found package:  net-fs/samba-3.0.28a
Use flags:      acl,automount,pam,python,readline,swat,winbind,ads,async,caps,cups,doc,examples,fam,ipv6,ldap,quotas,(-selinux),syslog",LINGUAS="-ja,pl

USE-flag descriptions:
* Global:
acl     Adds support for Access Control Lists
        pam     DANGEROUS to arbitrarily flip
python  Adds support/bindings for the Python language
readline        Enables support for libreadline, a GNU line-editing library that almost everyone wants
caps    Use Linux capabilities library to control privilege
cups    Add support for CUPS (Common Unix Printing System)
doc     Adds extra documentation (API, Javadoc, etc)
examples        Install examples, usually source code
fam     Enable FAM (File Alteration Monitor) support
ipv6    Adds support for IP version 6
ldap    Adds LDAP support (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol)
* Local:
        automount       Enables automount support
swat    Enables support for swat configuration gui
winbind Enables support for the winbind auth daemon
        ads     Enable Active Directory support
        async   Enables asynchronous input/output
quotas  Enables support for user quotas

real    0m9.772s
user    0m1.702s
sys     0m0.442s

Anyway, your script covers much more info than euse, nice script!
