I am very pleased to here that Diego Pettenò (flameeyes) will be working with the PR team etc. and specifically the fact that there will be a common Google calendar! (I just hope it will be make public).
Keep up the good work! _________________

Just did a quick search at google calendar and found one named "Gentoo Linux Calendar". Seems to hold GMN release dates, bugdays, meetings, etc. I don't know if that's the official one but it comes very close to it. Thanks to Diego for putting the calendar up.

Btw, a link to the calendar at the main site would be nice. |

Figure 8.1: Bug activity split-up
Of the 10273 currently open bugs: 16 are labeled blocker, 88 are labeled critical, and 353 are labeled major.
If we look at the other distribution, like red-hat or debian, there are not so many bugs like gentoo. Other people think if distribution haven't to much bugs they are STABLE! Otherwise take FreeBSD for bug testing?
I don't like BSD but it's not simple to talk whith people who give me work, and i doesn't know why they whant other distribs?! _________________ Do not use gentoo, it die |

It would be cool to have a link in the first post to the GWN issue. _________________ Paludis, the way packages are meant to be managed. |

I completely disagree. I did a study where I compared Gentoo's, Redhat's, and Novell's bugzilla. Gentoo was by far the best at fixing bugs. Take a look at my results (gathered December 2007) and see for yourself:
Code: |
Gentoo Novell Redhat
Open Bug Reports 9,836 3,319 19,612
Closed Bug Reports 177,952 28,296 163,432
Closed To Open Ratio 18.1 8.5 8.3
Developers 315 ~4,500 ~2,200 |
Note that my developer count for Novell and Redhat does not tell the "whole" picture.
Edit...If you think Gentoo has a lot of "major" open bug reports, check RedHat's bugzilla. |

The numbers are a bit confusing in my eyes. The number of open bugs is nearly constant for a long time, we are around 10.000 bugs, where over 2000 are requests for new packages. Also stabilisations, recruitment and other things are handled over bugzilla, so maybe a 1000 bugs more are not really bugs. I did some interpretation last year in http://www.faulhammer.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=194. Check out the GWN around that time, there was a news item about it with further information. |

There is nothing about the already delayed 2008.0 (Beta) Release in this Newsletter.
It would be good to inform the users about why the release is delayed and how long it will take.
Although the release schedule at http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/release/2008.0/index.xml#doc_chap2 says that snapshots had already been taken, I can't find any stages to download, except for MIPS..
Can anybody please explain to me how writing of the press release can block the Beta upload for 2 weeks?
Or is this release schedule just there to look 'good'? |

We are delayed because of the usual suspects: Security bugs that appear and create the need to update the snapshot, limited time by some people, coordination. It is on the way, I see constant commits to the usual repositories from releng (I am not part of that myself). I tried to prepare a news announcement but failed due to time constraints...I had more important things on my agenda. |

You can read the RSS feed for the front page. Or you can read the gentoo-gmn mailing list. |

I saw on the forum that the 2008.0 beta version is delay, is there any reason for that and why there is no news about it on the front page of gentoo.org ? |

Another notice why this is delayed: For personal reasons inside the Releng team the release is delayed. The topic is really personal but won't delay it ad inifinitum, so don't ask, though you can find the answer elsewhere. |
