Looking at the release schedule I assume that you guys will be looking for people to help test the beta after march 3rd.
Or is that no longer needed.

Yes, testers are always welcome. There are plans for what to test and what information to submit with your report, so stay tuned and read the gentoo-releng mailing list... |

From the top of my head:
- Kernel 2.6.24.*
- KDE 3.5.8
- Gnome 2.20 (LiveDVD)
- Xfce 4.4.2 (on the LiveCD)
- Some profile changes as USE=usb as default, developer profiles (not sure here)

Is there going to be the usual small version (without all the X stuff)? Those are wonderful to keep in my "toolbox" to boot various machines to check/fix them.

Yes. I was having a major brain-fart when I was typing. I couldn't for-the-life-of-me think of the Gentoo for the minimal CD...

I'm dying for the beta CD to get out, because I built a new box whose SATA controller isn't recognized by the 2007.0 CD. I could never figure out how to use the other LiveCD (Xubuntu GG) I have to work around it, so the baddest computer I've ever built has been a paperweight since last summer.
But that's backstory. The real thing is that - at least where I am - March 3 is quickly fading into oblivion, and I don't see anything about the new release, not on the releng list, either (most recent appears to be Feb 14th). I know I'm being whiny and all (sorry! geez!) but have any of the people who might have heard something about the release, like, heard something? Please tell me there's some scheduled release time (high noon at Muir Woods!) that would explain why it isn't out just yet. I think it's already tomorrow in Japan.
Okay, that's enough surrealism. Sorry; I'm tired.

I was just asking around about this the other day (to get a head jump on the announcement for when the beta is released). I was told that things were a few days behind, but that things were in good shape otherwise.
So, try not to die in anticipation
We will be announcing it when it is available, don't worry.

I would hope that it would not happen until most kernel-dependent applications catch up. I'm thinking specifically of video drivers such as nvidia. But there are probably quite a few others. No good getting the latest and greatest if the stable kernel doesn't support the features most people rely on. |

Thanks! That was exactly what I was looking for. I don't know why I couldn't find it on bugzilla. It looks like most issues are pretty much resolved from the last time I looked. |

In the meantime you could try the System Rescue CD, which is Gentoo-based, and just had its 1.0.0 release: http://www.sysresccd.org/
The x86 CD also has a 64bits kernel, so you can use it to install an amd64 Gentoo stage3 and chroot into it.

yngwin, you're my personal savior. The SysRescCD properly detected the RAID and ethernet hardware, so I could install gentoo onto the system (dang, it sure compiles fast...  ). I'm a few minutes from the first boot.
Thanks a ton for that link. That's just what I needed to lead me out of the long dark wilderness of ubuntu-on-my-underpowered-laptop.

No, I have not tried them. Perhaps I should. I read in several forums, including NVnews, about compilation issues with the .24 kernel, so I stayed away. I can't remember if any were gentoo systems though. However, if 3rd party drivers are not an issue for this kernel, and it is otherwise stable, I suppose the original question stands. When will 2.6.24 go stable? |

| I haven't yet found a stable .24 .config for my system - I've never encountered such problems before. dmesg still reports segfaults and after some time the system completely goes crazy. Seems there are still problems ahead. |

And that's all that's been said. We're now a week past release and as far as I know there haven't even been betas out. I really hope this doesn't fall down like 2007.1 did.
Just to be clear, my faith in Gentoo has not wavered at all. After running Gentoo on a test machine for a few months, I installed Gentoo on my main machine (which had been running Mandrake for a couple years) on October 10 of 2002 and haven't looked back (I know the exact date because of timestamps on some old files I keep around for this purpose). FIVE different machines with two different hda's. Same install I did on 10-10-02, no problems. I have no intention of leaving Gentoo.
It would just be really nice to have a new Minimal CD to put in my "Toolbox".
P.S.
Yes, I know there's thousands of LiveCD's out there, but having the Gentoo branded one fixing someone's hosed machine is priceless...

Yes, 10-10-02 is the date I joined here as well. I signed up after the install I mentioned above.
