|
|
Hey.
It is one thing I am having trouble understanding. What does the different stages contain?
I hear some say: Just install the stage three, it's the fastest one to install.
But is there something I'll be missing then and what do I get with a stage three install only?
Thanks. |

The difference is in how much is done for you already.
With a stage 1, you're doing everything from scratch, as far as compiling goes.
With a stage 2, you have compiler (etc) binaries, and you just have to compile the rest of the system.
With a stage 3, the entire system (core packages) is compiled for you! Basically all you have to do is configure and reboot.
In any case, you have to reboot and -then- start compiling the huge stuff like KDE
Basically, the installation progresses from stage 1 --> stage 2 --> stage 3.
A stage 3 tarball will just skip stages 1 and 2 for you. You still have the option of doing them yourself if you like, though.
The advantage of a stage 1 tarball is that you can compile -everything- yourself, exactly for your architecture. That means everything right down to the compiler uses the options you specified in /etc/make.conf ... optimizations, and USE settings.
Also, you can use a single stage 1 tarball on any x86, whereas the stage 2/3 tarballs are optimized for specific processors - 486, 586, and 686 (with 686 being the most common).
However, stage 1 takes much longer than stage 3.
Stage 2 is somewhere in the middle (not sure where, I've never done a stage 2 install). _________________ Even a stopped clock gives the right time twice a day. |
