cd to /usr/src/linux

then
grep CONFIG_FB_CON_DECOR .config

I suspect it will not be set.. or not be there at all.

CONFIG_FB_CON_DECOR=y

so it is set

must be a bug either with klibc or with splashutils

At what point are you getting this error?

Also, try the instructions here

I was getting the same compile time warning as Duffy when emerging splashutils:

I was able to get past it by using the unstable splashutils.
Code:
 echo media-gfx/splashutils >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
emerge splashutils

it now wants a condecor USE flag set, so I had to add that to my /etc/make.conf

I am using gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r2 ( and just in case I emerge --prune'd the older kernels)
I have an intel X3100 that I am using 915resolution and uvesafb successfully to get 1280x800 on the console.

With this setup, (uvesafb as a module, depending on 915resolution) fbsplash starts really late, and only in silent mode. In verbose mode it complains that it can't find the image. maybe because I didnt see any 1280x800 images in gentoo-themes.

When I've had some sleep, I'll try setting it to a common mode, e.g. 1024x768 and see if I can start in that mode and then tweak the VBE with 915resolution. I really don't know if it will work. Ah well, Its been a couple of weeks since I panicked my kernel :p

i emerged the unstable vesions of the gentoo-sources, klibc, and the splashutils
i re-created the initramfs and now i don't get any error messages

it works, looks like theres a bug with the stable versions

I'm sorry I assumed you were using the unstable version. It's not a bug per-se it is just that the unstable version is the first version to use fbcondecor.

oh didn't know that

spocks installation instructions do not mention the splashutils i thought it had to do with klibc

I can confirm that emerging splashutils 1.5.3.4 solves the klibc warning about fbcondecor (see my premature posting here for my experience).

However, now during boot when the machine gets to
Code:

* Setting framebuffer console images
fbcondecor: console 0 using theme 'livecd-2007.0'

It hangs right after the nice console decoration appears and has to be hard reset. Any thoughts? My first concern is that I set console=tty1 in grub.conf, not tty0. Some specs for my machine are in the post I linked above, but before I start posting all sorts of code I thought I'd ask since I am likely overlooking something obvious.

[...]

You can in case you have Intel 855 / 865 / 915 chipsets ...
Then you can use sys-apps/915resolution to modify the vbe-modes first and afterwards load uvesafb as a module. You can achieve that even for 965 chipsets if you patch (easily done) 915resolution ...

The steps in detail:

1. Emerge sys-apps/915resolution and modify /etc/conf.d/915resolution to your needs
2. eselect rc add 915resolution boot
3. Configure uvesafb as a module and recompile/install kernel & modules
4. Create a file /etc/modules.d/uvesafb with a line similar like that: "options uvesafb mode=1280x800-32 mtrr=3 scroll=ywrap vbemode=348"
5. Load uvesafb via /etc/conf.d/local.start with "modprobe uvesafb"

HTH

Thanks for the steps swimmer, it solved it for me!

I had to patch 915resolution to actually get 1280x800 vbemode and it only works with uvesafb compiled as module and loaded later in the boot process (after 915resolution sets in)

Not that it matters greatly, but 1280x800 works just fine on 16bit,

24bit-32bit does not - screen layout breaks and I get multi-coloured characters, only in the middle-to-top area of the screen...

Does anyone know why this happens, is it a config issue?

Thanks anyways, 16bit is a lot better than what was before!!

Hi to all.
I just registered cause I did made it work on my very old Notebook. :D Thank you Spock!
It's an Acer Travelmate 661 with integrated Intel 855GM graphic and native 1400x1050 display.
I tried to get it working on Ubuntu Hardy with Kernel 2.6.24 which already comes with uvesafb build as an module.
I needed to build v86d cause there is no package for my system yet.

Anyway, I grabbed the latest source (just v86d) from Spock's website and compiled it against the build.
But whatever I've done, it always failed with
Quote:
uvesafb: Getting VBE info block failed (eax=0x4f00, err=-3)
uvesafb: vbe_init() failed with -22
uvesafb: probe of uvesafb.0 failed with error -22

I tried all possibilities, build a new kernel, compiled klibc, build as module, built-in, ... nothing worked.
To make a long story short (actually it took me days ;) ). I did found the solution in v86d_common.c
My VBIOS seems to be pretty bad. Not only there are missing resolutions, it also seems to get wrong return values.
See attached patch, I had to "fake" a good 0x004F value when VBIOS returned a 0x014F.
Well, I think return should always have to be 0x004F, I am not familiar with VESA programming. May Spock can say something about.
I know its a dirty hack, but at least now its working here and may help others... :D

I have an ATI x700, and IF i load uvesafb not into initramfs, but after login with modprobe, framebuffer WORKS FINE!

Why in initramfs the kernel go in Oops ?

how soon your splash kicks in with uvesafb? mine is so slow that I can see about 10 messages of init untill fbsplash blasts off. Using old 2.6.22 with vesafb-tng splash kicks in instantly, so I don't have to see ugly init. According to spock vesafb was faster than vesafb-tng and uvesafb but my mileage shows that only uvesafb is slow (and vesafb sucks - 60hz). So is it possible to speedup uvesafb or use vesafb-tng with recent kernels?

Is it possible to get a 1680x1050 framebuffer with uvesafb and a nvidia 7600 card? In the uvesafb thread i have seen some people claiming they got 1680x1050 to display fine while other were having problems, so I am not sure.

I noticed that you have CONFIG_FB_INTEL and CONFIG_FB_VIRTUAL enabled - I only use CONFIG_FB_UVESA ...

Yes I have and it didn't work, I want to know if anyone else has had any success with this card.

Hello all.

I have a little problem with uvesafb (gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r3). Kernel parameter “video” looks like: “uvesafb:1024x768-32@85,mtrr:3,ywrap” and i actually have 1024x768. Problem is what refresh rate 85Hz is not set. I have an old CRT monitor and it can handle 85Hz with this resolution. More interesting, fbset utility tell me what refresh rate set correctly:

Code:

mode "1024x768-85"
    # D: 94.500 MHz, H: 68.677 kHz, V: 84.892 Hz
    geometry 1024 768 1024 6144 32
    timings 10582 176 72 3 34 104 4
    vsync high
    rgba 8/16,8/8,8/0,8/24
endmode

Frame buffer device information:
    Name        : VESA VGA
    Address     : 0xd0000000
    Size        : 25165824
    Type        : PACKED PIXELS
    Visual      : TRUECOLOR
    XPanStep    : 0
    YPanStep    : 1
    YWrapStep   : 1
    LineLength  : 4096
    Accelerator : No

But monitor information screen tell me what it receiving 60Hz only. Is there some way to get 85Hz in console, exactly what i have in X?

You need to re-emerge klibc first.

emerge klibc

That does not help :-)

Actually i have strictly followed the instructions on the page when installing uvesafb stuff: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=5049920#5049920

Hello,

I'm using uvesafb on several computers which works fine. But on my laptop the system doesn't start if I compile uvesafb into the kernel, I just get a blank screen.
So I tried using a module. The advantage is i get still access via ssh, after the screen goes blank.

dmesg output after loading uvesafb via command modprobe uvesafb mode=1280x800-8 mtrr=3 scroll=ywrap:

I'm using 2.6.24-gentoo-r3 on a 32bit Intel Pentium M Centrino.

Has anybody an idea what's going on and how to fix that?

Just a big "thank you" to Neo2, whose tuto made me get a splendid 1280x800 uvesafb framebuffer on my 13,3' laptop !! 8)

My problem was that everything seemed to work (good dmesg, saying uvesafb is launched) but there was no change on screen.

For those who can't make it, here's the way I got it :

* First I follow Spock's tuto.
* For the 2nd compile, I used the options given by Neo in his post (with the fonts, but it may not be necessary)
* I use this kernel option :
Code:
video=uvesafb:1280x800-32,mtrr:4,ywrap CONSOLE=/dev/tty1
and it works perfectly !

My relevant files :
Code:

dmesg | grep uvesafb
Kernel command line: root=/dev/sda1 video=uvesafb:1280x800-32,mtrr:4,ywrap CONSOLE=/dev/tty1
uvesafb: NVIDIA Corporation, G86 Board - e416h01 , Chip Rev   , OEM: NVIDIA, VBE v3.0
uvesafb: protected mode interface info at c000:b560
uvesafb: pmi: set display start = c00cb5c3, set palette = c00cb61e

uvesafb: VBIOS/hardware doesn't support DDC transfers
uvesafb: no monitor limits have been set, default refresh rate will be used
uvesafb: scrolling: ywrap using protected mode interface, yres_virtual=1600

My laptop is a lenovoY310A with nVidia 8400M GS

Edit: Yes I'm a noob, I had never compiled any kernel before (except once with genkernel last week), but in 2 days I've compiled something like 40 times...
