|
|
hi i know of a program in windows that lets you control another windows box live and remotely.
for example i can connect to my win2k server remotely from work and see my server desktop and run lotus notes schedules etc just like i was working locally!
is there anything like that for gentoo/linux for that matter and if so is it in portage?
oh one more thing, i would like to work remotely from work but they only use winNT so is there a windows client that will connect to a linux box and i can work on my linux box remotely from work?
have to pass the time working 3rd shift if any of you know how that is
any suggestions would be great!

emerge vnc or emerge tightvnc... i ligh tightvnc better... faster because of higher compression.
both VNCs have a client and server for linux and windows.... you can use any combination of client/server (win/win, linux/win, win/linux, linux/linux)
If you are coming from windows, it is similar to pcanywhere... _________________ Edward Alfert

i know of vnc, but that is just like working on the network of a remote computer you are correct in this nature.
but what im looking for is that of a emulator that allows me to actually work on my desktop. as i can see X windows etc from a remote computer.
unless vnc has since changed since ive remembered it, i dont think it will do the trick.
thanks for the sugg. though! _________________ .. ...kemical. ... .. .. |

Yeah:

ssh is so versatile that I would be surprised if something couldn't be tunnelled through it

I've been thinking of doing a remote desktop setup myself and before vnc was mentioned I thought it had to be done through XDMCP. So my question is what is the difference between XDMCP and VNC? |

They are quite different. XDMCP is the protocol that defines communication between remote X servers and an xdm session that is hosted somewhere else. You need to have X running on your "client" machine in order to use XDMCP. vnc allows a display to be exported from a Windows box or a Unix X server to a remote client that may be running in X, Windows, or even java. The latter can be used when you cannot or do not want to run an X server on the client machine.
BTW, you don't really need to run XDMCP to get applications running on a remote X server anyway - you can just start the X server, telnet to/login the other box, set the display and launch your application to display on your client.
Some info on XDMCP:

The next Kde3.1 has a desktop sharing , it's just great.
I used it and the control is 100%. _________________ All for one and one for All
