Almost certainly your logfiles. Do you have snort, apache, mysql or some other high-volume application installed?
Check /var/log to see if there's one particular log that's getting out of control.

portage likes to fill your /usr/portage/distfiles directory with all the crud its downloaded, and helpfully doesnt delete it when its done (its trying to be nice ). just go in there and have a look at all the files sitting in there to see if thats your problem.
You can safely remove these files, but when you emerge that package again it will d/l off the net again. |

And you're 100% positive you haven't installed anything over this period? Anyone else use the computer?
OK, so the next step is to figure out what directory is using all that space. Try something like the following:
Code: | du --max-depth=1 -h / |
That will print out, at a summary level, how much space each top-level directory in your root partition is using. (this command can take a while)
From there, chances are there will only be one or two directories that are over 2GB in size, (/usr is likely one) so drill down on those directories:
Code: | du --max-depth=1 -h /mybigdir |
and
Code: | du --max-depth=1 -h /mybigdir/mysubdir |
And so on. That will let you find the one directory that's consuming all the space. _________________ The problem with political jokes is that they get elected |

You can also try:
Code: |
find / -size +1024k -exec ls -l {} \;
|
to find files greater than a size (substitute path for "/" and any size for 1024 above). |
