I have a realtek PCI ethernet card in my ultra5 (which works under gentoo i386) as the on-board ethernet device doesnt work.
The real pain is, that the onboard ethernet is still detected by dmesg and whatnot (and solaris....) however my realtek PCI card is not.
Anyone here know more about using PCI ethernet NICs in an ultra5 than I do?
If I cant get the networking up, I cant make gentoo go _________________ -Tim Smith |

Any card listed in the kernel config *should* work.
Do you have the kernel compiled to include the Realtek card? or if you have it as a module, can you load the module? _________________ -Todd <todd@gentoo.org>

Im booting from the install CD
the problem is, that without the network device I cant download the sources to install ....
also, the card doesnt even show up in dmesg
-ed: also, if it helps, i used the bootprom to "test net" to check out the onboard NIC, and what fails is the "tranciever check" and returns an error code "-1" .....
the blinkeylight on my hub shows no link indication, however after i booted the gentoo CD and tried to ifconfig and route (as normal) anyway, the linklight comes on for apx 2 seconds, then goes off for apx 8 seconds, and this repeats indefinately....? ... so confused.... _________________ -Tim Smith |
