I followed chatwoods Software Raid Howto. Everything works fine, but I cannot install grub. my md0(hda+c5) is /boot, md1(hda+c6) is /
Code:
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
(hd0,4)
(hd1,4)

my menu.lst reads:
Code:
title Gentoo
root (hd0,5)
kernel (hd0,4)/boot/mykernel root=/dev/md1

I have the recursive boot symlink in /boot. when calling grub
Code:
grub> root (hd0,5)
Filesystem is reiserfs, partition type 0xfd

grub> setup (hd0)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists ... no
Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists ... no

so, here I'm stuck, I cannot install grub. I also tried without the (hd0.4) in the "kernel" line in menu.lst, but the problem is the same.

Is there anything I missed to do??

Plse, what is the advantage of software raid
Esp as add-in cards now very afforable ?.
does it avoid the issue of a slower drive determining the
speed used of a faster in array ?

Grub's root command specifies the boot partition, not your filesystem root. So, in grub you should type

Code:
grub> root (hd0,4)
grub> setup (hd0)

Shit :) on the other systems I've set up gentoo so far I never had /boot on an extra partition, so I never came across that mistake before! I installed lilo in the meantime, due to urgent delivery of the server ..

Thanks (for the next one, I prefer grub ;) )!
