Well, on my hardware, bad things happen if I use stable kernels.

Oh me too, if I use gentoo...

Fortunately I have found the light.

Fedora? Lucky if it even boots on my hardware. Fat chance of getting it to install (1: It'd never see the DVD drive. 2: I won't waste bandwidth with a whole DVD, and it wouldn't get my NIC to work either).

anyone else notice a distinct lack of custom kernel patchsets the last couple months? there are a handful but nothing like we used to see. any ideas why they all dried up? (besides the strain of maintaining them)

i'm back to gentoo-sources.... only real alternative is zen-sources.

Same, though I'm thinking about trying the zen-sources. Just have to read up a bit on them first.

I don't like Redhat.. Period.. It's a bloated distro and doesn't support what I do to it with older and newer systems. Not to mention I can't tweak it to specific tasks and some systems don't need a GUI since they're headless. Plus.. They have CD-ROM drives, so I couldn't use it anyway.

..and I use gentoo-sources.. Kernel 2.6.23 at the moment..

I use the vanilla sources because I used them with Slackware without problem. I compiled a gentoo-source kernel, but I wasn't really all that impressed. Also, while I know there's a way to emerge something in a 2.6.22.x version, I much prefer the vanilla stuff because I know it will support my machine properly. The current gentoo-source is 2.6.23.x, and that kernel version doesn't properly support wireless networking via ndiswrapper/wpa_supplicant.

Put plainly, I trust the vanilla sources. I have worked with them since I started compiling my own kernels, and I know what to expect after all is said, done, and compiled.

Blessed be!

zen-sources on my notebook
gentoo-sources on my desktop (+ 2 servers I maintain)

and in the past I've used various experimental patchsets on my notebook, among them: nitro, viper, beyond, kamikaze.
and ck on my desktop - but I had to move on, as my new hardware requires a 2.6.23 kernel - sigh

gentoo-sources for desktop/laptop
hardened-ssources for servers

I have tried quite a few other kernels including love-sources, ck-sources & mm-sources and I really don't see much speed improvement versus stability.

Hardened sources for servers is excellent, stable and not updated too often.

I run arch stable on all kernels.

I use gentoo-sources on all of my machines. I've tried most of the other kernels just to give them a try. Some seem faster; however, I always end up having stability issues, so I switch back to gentoo-sources.
Gentoo-sources *just works*, so I really don't have much of a need for anything else. The main reasons I try other kernels also is for hibernate support, but I can never get it quite working right. Always end up having problems because of the nvidia binary.

gentoo-sources. What is surprising, I find it more responsible and faster than other patchsets, including zen/kamikaze-sources. Maybe it is just that I can't configure it properly, but I tried a few configurations and the responsiveness was still not good, especially while compiling stuff (though niceness of portage is 19).

zen-sources. So far all the non-vanilla kernel patches I've needed or wanted were in there, so I stayed with this patchset.

Depends on the system. I'm using gentoo-sources for the desktops, suspend2 (tuxonice now I guess) for laptops, and hardened for the firewall. I used hardened on the desktops for a while. However, too many things broke. I use gentoo-sources for the servers as well. I use distcc quite a bit and I figure it's best to keep a consistent tool-chain.

I hadn't heard of zen-sources. I don't see it in portage. Is there a site that tells about it?

Currently using Gentoo-sources on my desktop though I prefer the vanilla-sources even though unsupported by Gentoo though 2.6.23 vanilla was borked (missing to many settings and unusable)

As soon as I start installing Gentoo onto my laptop, it'll run the gentoo-sources as I'll be installing an Intel Wi-Fi card that has Open Source Drivers that work nicely.
