I have configured everything for my Nvidia card as suggested in the Desktop Configuration guide:

if I modprobe NVdriver I get the following:
modprobe NVdriver
/lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/video/NVdriver: unresolved symbol pm_unregister_R94097bd6
/lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/video/NVdriver: unresolved symbol pm_register_R027ebe5e
/lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/video/NVdriver:
Hint: You are trying to load a module without a GPL compatible license
and it has unresolved symbols. Contact the module supplier for
assistance, only they can help you.

/lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/video/NVdriver: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/video/NVdriver failed
/lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/video/NVdriver: insmod NVdriver failed

this has woked in the past. I just recompiled my kernel. is there a chance I screwed something up in there?

you'll need to recompile the NVdriver, which can simply be done by

emerge nvidia-kernel

to compile against the new kernel. also, if you are using devfs, there shouldnt be any configuration required for the NVdriver module.

hope that helps.

That was my first thought. Because I know that after recompiling the kernel, I have to re-emerge the nvidia-kernel. After I rebooted from the kernel recompile, I typed emerge nvidia-kernel. When that did not work, I typed emerge unmerge nvidia-kernel. Then emerged nvidia kernel again. That is where I am at currently. Is there anything else you may suggest?

compile new kernel, reboot, do: emerge media-video/nvidia-kernel media-video/nvidia-glx
when thats done, do: opengl-update nvidia
thats all you should have to do, if something isnt messed up.

I tried that. The other step is that I have to nano -w /etc/X11/XF86Config.
I have to unremark the
# Load "glx"
then change the
Driver "nv"
to equal
Driver "nvidia"

Once I mke these changes, the computer will not boot into X

You don' t have to modprobe it, it supposed to be loaded by itself.

After emerge nivida-kernel nvidia-glx,

Did you remove

Load "dri"

in your XF86Config file?

Load "glx" should be uncommented
and the driver should be set to nvidia, not nv.

Wondering if anyone has solved this problem. I'm now experiencing it too.

Everything worked fine until...
I recompiled a new kernel, unmerged and emerged nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx, and now I can only get things to work with the old nv driver.

modprobing gives me the following

Code:
modprobe NVdriver
/lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/video/NVdriver: unresolved symbol __global_cli
/lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/video/NVdriver: unresolved symbol tqueue_lock
/lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/video/NVdriver: unresolved symbol __global_save_flags
/lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/video/NVdriver: unresolved symbol __global_restore_flags
/lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/video/NVdriver:
Hint: You are trying to load a module without a GPL compatible license
and it has unresolved symbols.  Contact the module supplier for
assistance, only they can help you.

/lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/video/NVdriver: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/video/NVdriver failed
/lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r7/kernel/video/NVdriver: insmod NVdriver failed

I have NVdriver in my modules.autoload, but during boot up I get "Failed to load".
The only major system change since my last compile is the compiler update to 2.95.3 r7.

Any ideas...
