Ok, I was ssh'd into my system from work and recompiled the kernel with IPTables and also preempt. Everything went fine with that and I rebooted and emerged some programs. Got home re-emerged the nvidia-kernel driver and tried to modprobe it and it was as if the module did not exist. I tried moprobing my nic module and that would not work either. I removed preempt and all is well again.
This is pretty agervating to say the least. The same thing happens if I choose the correct proc type as well. A little background of my system;
MSI KT3Ultra333 MB, 256mb DDR333 mem, GF2ti whatever, 1000mhz athlon proc., ext3, default athlon cflags (nothing added to them),
Other people I know run the preempt patch and can select the correct processor type without any problems. These are athlon/via system but not as new. I can only SURMIZE that not being able to select the corect proc. type is caused by the via chipset that my mb has on it. Why in the world enableing preempt causes the same thing to happen, well almost the same thing, I don't know. With preempt I don't get any errors (when trying modprobe) accept that the module can't be found. With the correct proc. selected I get _mmx_something when trying to load a module. So I am stuck without preempt unless someone can clue me into what the resolution to this is (if there is one). Thanks.
PS: Without preemt or the correct proc selected everything runs fine, no lockups, games work perfectly, life is good. Id really like to use preempt though |

In that case I would have to say that its has to do with some other hardware plugged into my board. Could be my nic I guess. Could be usb. Do you have usb enabled in the bios? What about the intergrated sound? Give me some info on you setup please. This is very annoying |

I've been using kernel 2.4.19-r7 with preempt and the NVidia drivers and haven't had any problems yet.

Bah. Preempt and my gf2 have been nothing but trouble. I just recompiled with low latency and w/o preempt and all my problems went away. Go figure. Seems to be pretty random. |
