How much ebuilding can i do in a chroot environement?

Am I likely to have any problems doing an emerge gnome in a chroot
environement within Mandrake? Will it effect the speed of the resulting
binaries?

<edit> oh and should i have my kernel compiled first- I have good reason not
to do it all in order
