Hi,

I'm semi new to Linux and have decided to give Gentoo a go. Firstly I did an install of Gentoo - everything went fine - then I installed KDE - this too went fine. But, due to problems with ALSA I have decided to reinstall in the system from scratch again.

HOWEVER.

This time, Gentoo installed fine. But when I did 'emerge kde', it gave me errors when it was ebuilding xml-parser?!? It mentioned some stuff about make.conf or make.profile being newer or at a future date than when something was compiled???

The only things I did different the second time were:
1. Do an emerge rsync again after installing Gentoo - didn't do this first time. I did this from following the instructions in Destop Config Guide.
2. Add 'cups' to the USE variables in /etc/make.conf before emerging kde.

Anybody got any idea why it hasn't worked?!?!

Thanks in advance, 8)

I don't know if its the exact same problem, but I know that the 3.0.2 ebuild crapped due to missing dependencies, alot when it was first released, i don'tknow if it even got updated, but the workaround was to emerge kdelibs then emerge kde, might as well try it, its worth a shot. :)

I was wondering if to use KDE with cups, whether all you had to do was add 'cups' to the /etc/make.conf USE variable before emering kde... Or do you have to install cups packages first?

Thanks,

as long as its in your USE Variables the KDE Ebuild should fetch the cups package and build it before it tries to merge kde.
