This is a Creator Ultra II w/ 256Meg and 9 Gig HD.
Linux dolphin 2.4.21-sparc-r1 #3 SMP Tue Aug 5 15:09:11 EDT 2003 sparc64 sun4u TI UltraSparc II (BlackBird) GNU/Linux
dolphin etc # cat /proc/cpuinfo
cpu : TI UltraSparc II (BlackBird)
fpu : UltraSparc II integrated FPU
promlib : Version 3 Revision 25
prom : 3.25.0
type : sun4u
ncpus probed : 1
ncpus active : 1
Cpu0Bogo : 591.46
Cpu0ClkTck : 0000000011a4b4
MMU Type : Spitfire
State:
CPU0: online
I have rebuilt the kernel several times already with:
<*> Audio support (EXPERIME
Using <M> CS4231 Lowlevel Driver
<M> Dummy Lowlevel Driver
But still get unresolved symbols when trying to load cs4321 module.
dolphin linux # insmod cs4231
/lib/modules/2.4.21-sparc-r1/kernel/drivers/sbus/audio/cs4231.o
/lib/modules/2.4.21-sparc-r1/kernel/drivers/sbus/audio/cs4231.o: unresolved symbol unregister_s parcaudio_driver_Rsmp_bdfb5092
/lib/modules/2.4.21-sparc-r1/kernel/drivers/sbus/audio/cs4231.o: unresolved symbol sparcaudio_i nput_done_Rsmp_c866f1e8
/lib/modules/2.4.21-sparc-r1/kernel/drivers/sbus/audio/cs4231.o: unresolved symbol sparcaudio_o utput_done_Rsmp_73205cde
/lib/modules/2.4.21-sparc-r1/kernel/drivers/sbus/audio/cs4231.o: unresolved symbol register_spa rcaudio_driver_Rsmp_b392ba7eNTAL)
I have read through the forum and it seems like others have had success with the SBUS onboard sound for the Ultra sparcs.
Does anyone have an idea how to fix the unresolved symbols?
Thanks,
Jamtek |

I have it working on an Ultra 2 here with no problems. Have you been rebooting with the new kernel after rebuilding it? Also you can try moving your /lib/modules/kernel-version directory and doing make modules_install again and see if it helps. |

Try recompiling the kernel but compile cs4231 into the kernel as opposed to making it as a module. My Ultra 2 worked with that config. |

Moving the /lib/modules/kernel-ver sounds like a good idea. I have been reloading the box after each rebuild and at one time I did compile the cs4321 into the kernel, but no joy. I even considered starting from scratch, but it took over 48 hours last weekend to build KDE.
Too bad, I will not be able to get to the machine until Monday. This is actually at my office we pullled a few Ultra II, Ultra I's, Sparc 5 machines out of moth balls. So far, everyone who's seen it is impressed. It's got decent performance and the transparent Konsole with KDE is a welcome change from Solaris CDE.
Thanks, again |

Nada, I have tried the varius suggestions and rebuild and reloaded the kernel 1/2 a dozen times, compiling the cs4321 as a module and in the kernel itself since this is whats reported to work. The good news is I have trimmed fat off the kernel each time and its now a lean mean fighting machine.
My make.conf was generic, just a few suggested cflags:
USE="gnome gtk -kde -qt"
CFLAGS="-mcpu=ultrasparc -O3 -pipe"
However at one point I did change "CHOST="sparc-unknown-linux-gnu" to
CHOST="sparc-sun4u-linux-gnu"
Next stable kernel release I'll do stage I install instead of a stage III, not that that should matter. Anyhoo, I still thing this is best Linux distro going for the Sparc platform and I now use it as a Network admin. workstation.

I'd try to remove the dummy sound driver module.. not sure if it makes any difference, but I have it turned off on all my machines and audio is fine.
Also, change that CHOST back to its original setting. _________________ -Todd <todd@gentoo.org>
