here is your problem: libXfont.so.1 is a symlink to libXfont.so.1.5 which didn't work for me either, I also have a libXfont.so.1.4.1, symlinking libXfont.so.1 to that and recompiling the font packages did the job for me.
The problem is that the command bdftopcf seems not to work with libXfont.so.1.5, and that is needed to called while instaling the fonts all the time. Please run the command and post the output (if there is some).. Having linked liXfont.so.1 again libXfont.so.1.5 it gave an error to me, linked again libXfont.so.1.4.1 there is no output (just for the command without any argument) but it does it job while the installation of the fonts.
Next mysterious thing is that you don't have a libXfont.so.1.4.1, I have that and libXfont.so.1.5, a friend has only libXfont.1.4.1.. There is only one version on libXfont package in portage, so I have no idea why that is.. Maybe some dev can bring some light in that after that seems to be the problem after all..

well if nothing happened that would be a good in my experience.. For me it gave me that error:
Code:

bdftopcf: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libXfont.so.1: undefined symbol: serverClient

having linked libXfont.so.1 against libXfont.so.1.4.1 is disappeared..

daa_rockwilder:
for you it did look like it did for me..
do like I said before:
Code:

cp /usr/lib/libXfont.so.1.4.1 /usr/lib/libXfont.so.1.5

and remerge fonts:
Code:

emerge font-misc-misc font-adobe-100dpi font-adobe-75dpi font-adobe-utopia-100dpi font-adobe-utopia-75dpi font-adobe-utopia-type1 font-alias font-cursor-misc freefonts

and what font ever you want to install
you can check
Code:

equery l font

so see what what you have right now, and should be rebuilded.. not all fonts need bdftopcf, but it's save to rebuild all and it won't cost much time.
I realize the solution is not really clean, but you can restore current state with remerging libXfont and the time the bug is fixed the whole thing won't be nessecary anymore anyway..

problem is gone with x11-libs/libXfont-1.1.0
anyway you of course have to recompile the fonts..

Hi you,

I've had those problems in the past, too. The last time I got the 'fixed'-font error message was yesterday and I solved those problems always by copying the whole /usr/share/fonts folder from a friend's PC. That may seem rude but I spent hours of trying to solve the problems by other means - of course all suggestions from the web didn't work.

However, when trying to emerge kdebase-3.5.2-r2 it fails saying:

Code:
Making all in fonts

!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant.

As you will notice in the fourth line it says bdftopcf: symbol lookup error: /lib/libXfont.so.1: undefined symbol: serverClient
The difference to your error messages is that your's say /usr/lib/libXfont.so.1 instead of /lib/libXfont.so.1.

Here are some folder listings:

Code:
dreamcatcher ~ # ls -al /usr/lib/libXfon*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 882770 17. Jun 04:19 /usr/lib/libXfont.a
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root    864 17. Jun 04:19 /usr/lib/libXfont.la
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     17 17. Jun 04:19 /usr/lib/libXfont.so -> libXfont.so.1.4.1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     15 17. Jun 12:48 /usr/lib/libXfont.so.1 -> libXfont.so.1.5
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 511600 17. Jun 04:19 /usr/lib/libXfont.so.1.4.1
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 511600 17. Jun 12:46 /usr/lib/libXfont.so.1.5

So, that is similar to your situation before the fix you suggested.

Code:
dreamcatcher ~ # ls -la /lib/libXfont*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 786794 11. Feb 2005  /lib/libXfont.a
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     15 11. Feb 2005  /lib/libXfont.so -> libXfont.so.1.5
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     15 11. Feb 2005  /lib/libXfont.so.1 -> libXfont.so.1.5
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 516793 11. Feb 2005  /lib/libXfont.so.1.5

As you can see, there is no libXfont.so.1.4.1 in this folder. My emerge.log says that I emerged x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2 on Feb., 11th 2005.

Here's my emerge --info:

I hope that you have an idea of why my bdf2pcf wants to use /usr/lib/libXfont.so.1 instead of /lib/libXfont.so.1 because that seems to cause trouble to few other font problems of mine. Thanks in advance.

I am having a problem compiling the fonts.
I contiumly get an error

Code:

t: command not found

when it tries to run this line

Code:

t <tile> | gzip <file.tar.gz>

And it does tihs for every font package.
This also gives the error message of the thread title

Being the masochist I am I emerged the packages outputted by "equery l fonts" one by one

The package that needs to be re-emerged specifically for the "could not find default font: fixed" problem is media-fonts/font-misc-misc - this fixed the problem :D

Try re-emerging media-fonts/font-cursor-misc

For me, emerging media-fonts/lfpfonts-fix did the trick,
and in xorg.conf:
Code:

Section "Files"
  ...
  FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/lfpfonts-fix"
  ...
EndSection

I had the same problem but none of the tips here helped. In another thread I found my solution:
Code:

rm /usr/lib/libXfont.so.1.5
emerge libXfonts bdftopcf
emerge font-misc-misc font-cursor-misc font-alias

Now it's working again (whee, this is firefox and not lynx anymore :-) )
To be save I'm currently reemerging all the fonts from
Code:
equery l font

Ouch!! Same here. Before anything else, I simply tried to emerge font-misc-misc. It installed bdftopcf, mkfontdir and mkfontscale as NEW packages (so they were not installed... 8O ). Then, when emerging font-misc-misc it gives an error:

Code:

4x6.bpf /usr/share/fonts/util/map-ISO8859-1 ISO8859-1
make: 4x6.bpf: Command not found

and portage aborts!! So I can not install this package, and my X is still broken!! Any ideas?

Cool :D Solved (this one. now it is complaining about cursors... )
Anyway:

Code:

emerge font-util font-misc-misc font-alias

this did the trick with the error.

Usually I recommend this:
Code:
emerge encodings font-alias font-util font-misc-misc font-cursor-misc

This seems to be what did it for me (I didn't mess with the 1.4 to 1.5 copying suggestion though).

Okay, I also had this problem which wasted more than a day of my time trying to get a working system. It's sad when upgrades break things like this.

I tried many suggestions from these forums and other places on the web, but nothing worked:

emerging font-misc-misc (Etc) produced a font dir without fonts.scale and empty fonts.dir files.
mkfontdir did not work as advertised and fix them either.

Following on some suggestions, I discovered that I had libXfont.* files in both /lib/ and /usr/lib, and bdftopcf was trying to use the ones in /lib

So I zipped up libXfont.* from /lib (as a backup), and then rm them.

emerge font-misc-misc font-cursor-misc
startx

worked for me. I suppose I should also emerge the 75 and 100 dpi fonts since startx was complaining about them too.

I hope this helps someone... I was going crazy with this problem.

I don't know whether copying the so.1.4.1 to so.1.5 is necessary or not... I did it, but it didn't help because it wasn't that version that was being run.. until I deleted the versions in /lib

For the record, I'm on AMD64, other archs may not be solved the same way.

Hopefully the admins/maintainers will sort out the real cause of these duplicate-yet-different files.

We really don't need these problems :-)

Cheers, Ian

I was having the same problem, but I found a solution that I'm going to pass along.

#rm /lib/libXfont*
#rm /usr/lib/libXfont*
#emerge libXfont

I found that the libXfont files in /lib were being used, and are not needed anymore. I hope this helps.

Jeff

Sorry, didn't realize the poster above me had the same solution.

My electricity went off today for longer than my UPS could support. On rebooting, X failed because it could not find the default "fixed" font. I had previously used this thread to resolve a similar X failure. Since that time I found that kdebase-3.5.2-r2 regularly failed with the same errors as mentioned above.

I tried several re-emerges as outlined above. Nothing worked until I tried the "rm /lib/libXfont*" command. I _think_ this solved the root problem. After that I re-emerged libXfont and then X came up. Next I tried to emerge kdebase-3.5.2-r2, which also worked.

I hope this is correct and helps others whose power may go off tomorrow.

John

So after a week becoming a friend of 'elinks' now i am back on X again.

So for everyone who stumbles over this problem and wonder where the wrong libXfont comes from read my suggestion.

I first was trying to upgrade to xorg-7.1.1 and then read in some thread (i forget where it was) that this version
doesn't work with the nvidia driver. So i downgraded to xorg-7.0 and i think this is the point where the wrong libXfont comes from
(from emerging 7.1.1 before).

At last i only had to unmerge libXfont and remove all remaining libXfon.so's.
The i emerged it again and afterwards the font-misc-misc and the font-cursor-misc and every other
font that was installed before.

Now everythings works fine again.

So far so good
Greetings
DonMartio

None of the above advices worked out for me, so I removed my /usr/share/fonts completely and reemerge everything from my equery l font list...

Now xorg works flawlessly :)

A new install - and again the same problem... None of the above helped this time... I've copied /usr/share/fonts from my other Gentoo box, and I am investigating this issue right now...

EDIT:

I've got it!
The font that causes this is:
- media-fonts/font-cronyx-cyrillic

So guys, don't emerge this font...
I'm adding it to my package.mask
