I want to add a second IDE interface to my Ultra5 and turn it into a file server without the slow cmd chip in the way.

These cards look like they'd do it, with the added bonus of USB2 and SATA: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=pci+usb+ide&category0=

They say that there is linux support, but how good is it? Has anyone used one of these on sparc, or x86 for that matter?
The cards are quite cheap, and all of the sellers appear to be fronts for the same company

I suggest you try to talk to them and see what this "support" is all about. Also attempt to find out what chipset the card uses and cross check with the kernel code ... or you could take the plunge and buy one, plug it in and see what happens :) Good luck!

Try out a SIIG SC-UNS012. No IDE but has SATA, Firewire, and USB2.

It's working in my Ultra5 with /boot on the internal 4GB, / is on a pair of 120GB SATA drives with software RAID0. Everything is rsynced to a 320GB USB disk weekly.

I got one of these cards for christmas today, and it seems to work fine on the U5. (I considered the SIIG card, but it has been discontinued and was way more than I want to spend) It runs using the sata_via driver, and apparently the ide connector is just an on-board SATA->PATA adapter. It's set up with a 1G Compactflash card to boot from (with adapter of course); /usr, /var and /home are mounted on a 320G drive off the new card.
