I'm having an absolute nightmare trying to get Half Life 2 going on Gentoo. My spec is as follows:
Gentoo ~x86_64
nvidia-drivers-100.14.19
wine-0.9.48
gentoo-sources-2.6.23
Steam has successfully downloaded the game to my machine but every time I try to run it, I get the steam screen come up with the header Updating Half-Life 2 preparing to launch Half-Life 2 and an error box from wine with the following,
Steam.exe (main exception): Win32 StructuredException at 7A3CDF8D:
Attempt to read from virtual address 68 without appropriate access rights.
Then steam dies.
I've tried in a console
env WINEPREFIX="/home/fred/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 220
and the output I get is shutting down and a number that increases before the crash and this output
client callback thread error
fixme:dbghelp:MiniDumpWriteDump NIY MiniDumpWithDataSegs
fixme:winmm:MMDRV_Exit Closing while ll-driver open
Can anyone tell me what is going on, I've trawled the web for hours but still can't find the problem, has anyone got it going with a similar spec? I've tried downloading older wine versions but the result is the same, however, many people are claiming it works.
There is a steam log file but all it says is
CsComm Session Oct-30-2007 23:15:04.736 [16] ReconnectThread (16) Starting
CsComm Session Oct-30-2007 23:15:51.865 [16] ReconnectThread (16) Told to exit |

In order for Half Life 2 to run in Windows, you must have Administrator rights. In XP, this was easy, as every user created had admin rights by default, unless you disabled Fast User Switching. When the game starts rights are checked. In Windows you get a nice error box that says you need Administrative rights. In Wine, you get an abnormal exit. I don't know if this is fixed in Cedega, but I know it will not work in Wine, because you can never run Wine as Root. You may want to check at Transgaming, Cedega, the paid version of Wine. _________________ The Birth and Growth of Science is the Death and Atrophy of Art -- Unknown

I'm not saying you're wrong but the wine site actually lists half life 2 as working at silver rated and steam itself at gold rated
see this link
http://appdb.winehq.org/
I'm pretty sure they're referring to wine and not codeweavers but I could be wrong, what do you think? |

I have Steam working fine with wine 0.9.48. You do not need Cedega.
Now if I could just get Steam games not to lock up shortly after I start playing. . . |

I use 0.9.48 also. Strange.
I basically did like this (but from portage), but still I get that error.

There is a bug with wine 0.9.48 that made half-life 2 and hl2 based games crash when loading.
This is fixed in wine 0.9.49. |

Maybe it's something I'm doing wrong, however steam seems to work a lot better now. I'm running wine-0.9.49 on Gentoo ~x86_64 so it could be a 32-bit emulation problem. |

Also 0.9.48 works fine for Schizoid, so I don't think that is the problem:

I own cedega, and Half-Life Episode one.
In the beginning of July this year Valve/Steam stop the support for Win98 Systems! And after an Update steam stops Working in Win98 Mode. Now i can't launch the game even with cedega. And if i start in Win2k-Mode i get the same Error-Message.
What i want to say: It say nothing if it rate gold with wine. I think the problems are the same. And you could just wait for an Update of Wine/Cedegan. To re-Play Half-Life2.

Regards Chris | I know exactly what you're talking about, though HL2 works for me in Cedega in Win XP mode though it's quite flaky. It's too bad because it used to run pretty solid in Win 98 mode. I've always had bad luck trying to get it working with Wine. Wine is so ridiculously dependant on the version you are using and Steam is just flaky to begin with. I would say that if someone manages to get it to run under wine they should consider themselves lucky and not change or update anything if at all possible (though Steam auto-updates, which sucks).
Off-Topic: I wish i could ditch cedega, but I can't get Oblivion to run reliably in wine. It runs well indoors, though some of the effects are messed up, but as soon as I step into an outdoor area it usually crashes, either that or on an area load. The game runs awesome in Cedega though and everything works well except HDR, anti-aliasing, and loading a game once another game is in progress. |

Deactivating Steam-Community ingame should fix it.
Start Steam, go to File/Settings, In-Game and uncheck 'Enable Steam Community in-game". |

CS Source crashes for me if there is anyone else on the server. If I am in an empty server I can run around shooting all day, but if I join a server with some one else playing it locks up as soon as some one fires a gun (at least that is how it seems).

Both ALSA and OSS sound work fine until it locks up. I can play HL2 for a good while as well until I walk into the wrong room. I never actually finished the game and when I load my most accomplished save game there is a hall way you have to walk down and it locks up as soon as I walk into the room every time without fail. |
