Will the b43 driver be included in the .24 version of the suspend2 kernel?

I checked the most recent suspend2 kernel today and the bcm43xx driver weren't in them. would like to have network support If I ever am going to try to get suspension to ram working on my laptop.

Thanks for the great work devs. much appriciated. :)

That's a more recent 4306. We've had some reports of issues with speed on really early 4306 boards, but not with those. I'd also try again with 2.6.24 when it's available, the new b43 driver should help with your speed/reliability issues. The simple rate transitioning algorithm included with b43 should also help with reliability, especially under low signal strength conditions.

Ok, in my case there is a wall between the AP and the card. Signal strength gets listed as 85/100. Not sure if that qualifies as "low" but anyway.
Waiting for 2.6.24 seems to be the right solution at this point. I'll report on my experiencies with that kernel.

thanks for the tip, JoseJX!

Anyone had sucsess connecting to a secure wirless network like at a university with wpa_supplicant and bcm43xx? ndiswrapper is giving me problems, i have bcm4311 card working nativly in sabayon 3.4f mini its still 1mbit, but i just want to connect wout winXP :)

am trying only with ndiswrapper currently (no luck so far)

my university gave me this only ... ;(

The following items are taken from a wpa_supplicant (wpa_supplicant-0.4.9) configuration file known to work (with Slackware-10.2) on our wireless network:
eapol_version=2
ap_scan=1
fast_reauth=1
network={
ssid="ConcordiaUniversity"
key_mgmt=IEEE8021X
eap=TTLS
identity="${your_netname}"
password="${your_password}"
phase2="auth=PAP"
}

My university uses WPA Enterprise and I can connect using wpa_supplicant and my Airport Extreme, with a 2.6.21 kernel (haven't bothered to upgrade yet).

network={
ssid="e-U"
key_mgmt=IEEE8021X
eap=TTLS
identity="myusername"
password="mypassword"
ca_cert="/path/to/certificate/cacert.crt"
phase2="auth=PAP"
}

Hi, I have a couple of questions about the upcoming b43 driver. Apologies if the answer is already here, I did look over the thread (a bit).

I see that there are different firmware versions for b43 and for the current bcm43xx (soon to be known as b43legacy IIUC). My card is an old 4306 one (bcmwl5.sys version 3.30.15.0), do I need to seek out the new firmware for my card to work, or (worse possibility!) will I be stuck having to use b43legacy?

Havin_it:
I hope the new front page for this thread answers your questions.

fourccault:
I use a similar configuration as Sodki on the school network here with b43, works great.

I'm sorry to ask this, but I need a little confirmation: should we use b43legacy or b43 with the Airport Extreme?

It depends on your model. Apple sold both 4306 and 4318 cards as "Airport Extreme".

I get it now. I have a 4306, rev 03, so I guess I'm stuck with the legacy drivers.

I take it PHY 9 is still unsupported, from the 4311 Rev 02 cards?

Looks like the same for me. If I understand correctly that b43legacy will continue to use the SoftMAC stack (?), then I guess that means no ad-hoc mode for me... :cry:

madCoder|GN:
From the first message:
Quote:
The lone exception is a new revision of the 4311 chipset which is still unsupported at this time. Work has been started to figure the changes out.

We're working on it, but it requires another completely new start on reverse engineering since the older binaries we were working with don't have any code for these cards. As you can imagine, this takes a lot of time. I'm sure we'll announce it once we figure something out.

Havin_it, Sodiki:
No, SoftMAC has been depreciated. b43legacy is a port of the old PHY code to the new mac80211 stack. It's really an improvement over the SoftMAC driver, with better stability, automatic rate adjustment, etc. The only "legacy" part is that there is no updated firmware for these cards and that it's using the older PHY code (due to compatibility issues with the firmware).

Thanks for that. I did re-read the first message when you said you updated it. I don't remember reading that line, but maybe it was added after my question.

Either way, just thought I'd ask. It's really not a show-stopper, since ndiswrapper works. Looking forward to a native solution though. Thanks for all that you guys are doing!

my card works only with b43legacy driver it doesn't work with b43, why?
on b43legacy driver it associate only at 1Mb/s why?

Post the PHY version information from dmesg please, that's really the only way to tell which version you should be using.

As for 1Mb/s, it will associate at 1Mb/s intentionally, to ensure the highest possible rate of success when connecting. If the conditions allow it, the speed will increase after you start using the interface.

This indicates that you need to use the legacy driver. I forgot about 4309 chipsets that use the older G PHYs, I'll update the front page, thanks. :)

Hello there.

I am not sure where to start looking to fix this problem. I followed the instructions that were on the first page yesterday, before they were updated to the b43 driver. I decided to try this driver, instead of the ndiswrapper version, to try and fix a problem I found. As soon as I get an IP address from my dhcp server, programs open up slower than if I don't have an IP. Now for a little background:

Dell Inspiron E1405
Wireless adapter(lspci -n):0c:00.0 0280: 14e4:4311 (rev 01)
Kernel: 2.6.22-gentoo-r6 (configured as instructed on first page, before today...)
Module:bcm43xx

The program that is most noticable is vmware-server-console, which takes 2-3min to start, and 2-3 attempts to start a virtual machine. If I don't have my wireless adapter module loaded, or don't dhcp, then it opens in under 10 sec and is able to start/suspend/stop as expected. Even a gnome terminal takes 20-30 seconds longer while I have an IP address. Other programs like epiphany, firefox and evolution acts faster without wireless enabled, but it is tough to surf without network...

I really have no idea where to look, but thought you guys might be able to help.

Code:
~# dmesg
bcm43xx driver
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:0c:00.0[A] -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 17

This might be unrelated to the above poster, but last night I was experiencing repeated "silent" disconnections and the only thing that looked different in the output was the line:
Code:

TKIP: received packet without ExtIV flag from 00:03:2f:35:fb:e9

(different MAC in my case, I just copied this line from above)

I scanned and found the MAC in question was the only other network in range that was using WPA/TKIP (usually all my neighbours are just using WEP, or nothin' at all :S ) In my case, this line would occur once at a time, about the time the connection dropped. Could it be relevant?

The MAC address in my case is a nearby router with WEP enabled. I am using WPA. Here are the results from wpa_cli scan_results:

Code:

Hi,

I have 4318 on amd64 and I've tried the new b43 diriver in 2.6.24-rc3 and it seems to work fine, I can get even sometimes 54Mbs, but if I try to transfer a bigger file, the speed starts to change down and up and after a while it goes always to poor 1Mbs.

Anybody has seen this problem? Is there a way to avoid the speed changes?

It's not due to signal strength as I'm only 3m from my AP and it is workong well with older kernel and bcm43xx (allthough only in b mode not g).

Hello, I'm using vanilla-sources-2.6.24_rc3 on my iBook G4 and I'm trying to make my Airport Extreme work with the new wireless drivers.

Code:
# lspci -n | grep 14e4:43
0001:10:12.0 0280: 14e4:4320 (rev 03)

According to the insctructions, I should be using the b43legacy driver. I've followed the instructions, but when I loaded the b43legacy module, nothing was displayed in dmesg, which is kind of strange. I then compiled both b43 and b43legacy drivers as modules and let the system autoload the module, basically letting him decide what to use. It chose to use b43:

Code:
# lsmod
Module                  Size  Used by
b43                   141764  0
mac80211              131198  1 b43

And in dmesg:

Code:
b43-phy1: Broadcom 4306 WLAN found
b43-phy1 debug: Found PHY: Analog 2, Type 2, Revision 2
b43-phy1 debug: Found Radio: Manuf 0x17F, Version 0x2050, Revision 2
b43-phy1 debug: DebugFS (CONFIG_DEBUG_FS) not enabled in kernel config
phy1: Selected rate control algorithm 'simple'
udev: renamed network interface wmaster0 to eth1

That is nice. I can assume that my card uses the b43 driver and not the legacy one, right? But isn't that conflicting with the instructions on the first post of this thread? According to the log, I also have debug deactivated. I have to take care of that.

Another question: where should the firmware files be located? Under /lib/firmware/ or under /lib/firmware/b43/? I just copied them and have them in both places.

The problem that I have now is that I can't use the wireless card:

Code:
# /etc/init.d/net.eth1 start
 * Starting eth1
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not supported
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not supported
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not supported
 *   Configuration not set for eth1 - assuming DHCP
 *   Bringing up eth1
 *     dhcp
 *       Running dhcpcd ...
Error, eth1: interface is not Ethernet, FireWire, InfiniBand or Token Ring      [ !! ]

What could I be forgetting?

Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure why it picked b43 instead of b43legacy, but it'll definitely pick the correct driver, so don't worry about that. As for why it's not working, you probably need to have it rename the device to wlan0 instead of eth1. You can change this by changing the device name in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

Thank you, I didn't know that my wireless network interface could't have that name (ethX). I followed your advice and this is what I get now:

Code:
# /etc/init.d/net.wlan0 start
 * Starting wlan0
 *   Starting wpa_supplicant on wlan0 ...
ioctl[SIOCSIWAUTH]: Operation not supported
WEXT auth param 4 value 0x0 - ioctl[SIOCSIWAUTH]: Operation not supported        [ ok ]th param 5 value 0x1 -
 *   Starting wpa_cli on wlan0 ...                                        [ ok ]

I googled a bit about that error, but I only found people that got that error and could still establish a wireless connection, so I didn't worry much. Unfortunately, I'm still not able to make my wireless card work:

Code:
# iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0     No scan results

dmesg has a strange message, though:

Code:
b43-phy1 debug: Removing Interface type 2
b43-phy1 debug: Wireless interface stopped
b43-phy1 debug: DMA-32 0x0200 (RX) max used slots: 1/64

wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:14:f2:8f:52:12
wlan0: authentication with AP 00:14:f2:8f:52:12 timed out

Radio turned off by software? Is that why I can't list any wireless networks? Also, I don't recognize the MAC address of that AP, could be from a neighbour. But if the radio is off, how could he "catch" a MAC address?

Hi, I am using the gentoo sources, that is 2.6.23_rc3, I think, but this thread suggests me to use kernel 2.6.24_rc1.

Now, if I've done all the procedure listed in this thread (except I downloaded the same firmware in another place, since the one linked was corrupted), but I still can't get a working airport (iBook 12'', 1,33 Ghz), is possible that the problem is the kernel?

Basically if I type

Code:

ifconfig eth2 up

I get

Code:

SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory

but if I type

Code:

iwconfig eth2

I get

Code:

eth2 IEEE 802.11b/g ESSID:"Speedtouch" Nickname:"Broadcom 4306"
Mode:Managed Access Point: Invalid
[...]

that is, there's some wireless extension for eth2.

If I perfom a scan, it tells me that the device can't do a scan.

Hotplug is emerged, and the firmware is regularly in /lib/firmware

Then, my question is: do I have to use a later kernel? Are the vanilla-sources ok? Or ppc-sources?

And if the vanilla-sources are ok, the compile method is basically equal to the gentoo-sources one?

Thanks in advance to everyone.
