PostPosted: Wed Oct 31, 2007 4:49 pm    Post subject: Linux Presentation Reply with quote

I have the opportunity to do a presentation of some sort of technology of my choosing tomorrow night. I would like to do something relating to Linux, but I'm not sure what. I would love to do something on Gentoo, namely the perks of portage, but I don't have a box with Gentoo on it here.

I'm not by any means an advanced user of Linux, but I would call myself an intermediate.

Basically I'm looking at some sort of short presentation to do. Any ideas?

Package management in Linux (how you install stuff).

Linux desktop innovations (compiz, tracker, pulse audio, etc.).

Split off and dustbinned the junk. Seriously guys, time to show you're over six years old.

Edit: Re-merged Wietze's first post and Denstark's reply

If it were me I"d concentrate on the ideals behind linux, rather than the technicalities of the operating system itself. So, do an RMS.

Seriously though, posting a powerpoint file to a linux forum?

What about those of us without openoffice (or koffice) installed?

What were you thinking?

Or were you even thinking at all?

And so on and so forth...

You should do your presentation on compatibility issues in free software with Microsoft formats. ;)

?

That is like watching the guy at the Ford dealership drive home in a Honda. Or the chef at a restaurant order McDonalds. Or Steve Jobs typing on a Dell.

No, not at all. It was for CSEC (Computer Security Enthusiasts Consortium). Its a computer club thing where we discuss network security, and general computer related topics

Not sure if this will fit your class, but I'm most interested in Linux in terms of Social Informatics. Could you write about the GPL and how it has affected both technology and the community?

I already gave the presentation. It went very well. I was up there for over an hour (actually, about 1 hr 20 minutes) and we had some awesome talks. I did talk about the GPL and free software extensively. I also showed them IBM's old Linux commercial, that was a hit too :)

What do the staples represent in slide 11? "open source-friendlyness/function"?
none of them is open source, right?

how about intel? should have a higher staple! ;)

The graph was just a joke. Since Nvidia has had a better track record with Linux, I put it as over 9000.
