Yeah, well, I'm fairly grumpy today and I probably let a bit too much of that grumpiness seep through into that post...my apologies.
Anyway, the documentation section on http://www.gentoo.org has the answer to many commonly-asked questions about How Gentoo Works (as does the Gentoo FAQ). Checking there (as well as searching these forums) should always be your first course of action.
