so if I type "emerge gnome" will that emerge gnome 1 or 2
Also, if I want to emerge a gnome library based application, will portage make me get all the gnome 1 libraries? If so I'll stick with KDE to keep my hard drive usage down and avoid installing big libraries for gnome 1 and 2
Point out where I'm wrong
but do it politely |

You installed KDE - so keeping your hard disk usage down is no longer of interest of course, currently due to the switch from gnome1 to gnome2 there are more libraries needed, but still less than with kde (at least what my du shows)

I'm gui-less!
so would "emerge gnome" install gnome2 for me? And is there a good guide for setting it up? |

As with kde, there is no real need to "set it up" - just enter your desired display manager in /etc/rc.conf :
Code: | DISPLAYMANAGER=gdm
XSESSION=Gnome |
About further configuration, you might want to check out this thread (much to read, though)

Yes do a emerge -c sync & emerge -c rsync. Then do emerge -p gnome to get a package list of what is to be installed. most will be 2.?? versions. For more inf check out desktop forms. Search gnome2. I would guess should find the install guides.

See the comments in /etc/rc.conf:
Code: | # XSESSION is a new variable to control what window manager to start
# default with X if run with xdm, startx or xinit. |
So, if you're using gdm, XSESSION shouldn't matter. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |
