odd error when i try to emerge kde

I do this
emerge --pretend kde-base/kde

I get this
Calculating Dependencies /
!!! Error: couldn't find mate for dev-lang/python in kde-base/kdelibs-3.0.2

System details

It is an athlon system built with gcc-3.1 with the athlon-tbird flags set.

Any ideas? I used this guide as a stepping stone to get gcc-3.1 complied and installed

Since this in an error when I try to emerge kde and not complie it, I figured that it would be better placed here.

Also happens with gnome, but not with fluxbox and afterstep
