ya know i have noticed that we setup our boxes as multiple user boxes and set it up so that if someone else wants to sit down at it they can log in thier own account and do as they wish. but i dont actually know many people who actually share thier boxs, im the only one ever logged into my box at teh consoul so how may of you share your box and other people actually log in at the consoul on a regular basis.

I don't let go of mine long enough to share it. Check your email and get out of my way :D

I will let my girlfriend use the comp if she needs to. Normally, it is just email or surfing.
No need to log out for that.

My old lady is scared of linux. In fact if it doesn't have HUGE buttons then she's useless on it

Doh! Egregious necro! Banhammer!

Single-user systems might make sense for some use-cases (e.g. cell phones), but the user would need some mechanism of temporarily escalating privileges when desired. Several frameworks exist which can be used to control privileges on bases other than userid, so it should be quite feasible to do this.

Some of the Linux-based cell phone and tablet "operating systems" provide for only one user by normal means of access, although I don't know how many of them are actually doing away with "root" internally or have actually done away with account-related conventions. I suspect it's few or none, since I think the the concept of file "ownership" is built into the Linux VFS.

A decade of misery and suffering will do that to a man.
