libpng and/or imlib 'howto'? or something better?

hi i've decided to try and write a 'real' gui as far as being fully graphical (think .. skins).. its going to be a remote controlled interface. anyways ive kind of decided on using png and libpng (or imlib). problem is i am having trouble finding decent documentation/howto/faq/something similar for either of them. theres a few example sources at libpng.org but i was hoping for something more. i am fairly profecient at c/c++ (ableit all of my experience was in windows but :P ). also if someone knows of something more suited please let me know. i looked at gtk but afaik it only supports xpm ?
