I'm thinking about replacing my server (which is stashed away in the broomcloset :D ) ... I'm currently considering getting hold of a VIA Epia system since it runs alot cooler than the current Celeron 600Mhz ... The question is, how does the epia compare in speed?

The server runs my firewall, samba, apache, mysql, php and some other smaller services.

I've looked at some benchmarks, but all they do is concentrate on the desktop experience, which is quite different from the server (ie, I won't be affected by poor gfx performance, or bad sound).

Any experience/thoughts?

I have VIA EPIA 800 that runs as a firewall, sftp and samba server. It doesn't seem to have many issues. I do have the occasional eth0 oops from the kernel during really heavy loads (net-news pulls, etc.). My other server are more beefy but for general purpose light use this little platform rocks.

At a local computer store they had several of the 933Mhz C3 boards in machine. He said they were benchmarking to about 600 Mhz (P3 I beleive).

Via's new nemiah core cpu is suppose to be a lot faster at many things, but also now needs a small fan.

I have one of Epia-V-Series and use it as 24 hour server with apache, firewall, nfs and some more stuff..after one or two days I set the FSB from 166 Mhz to 66 Mhz and I belive thats really okay (is more cooler, and not very slower when you use apache etc.)

The 1G Nehemiah actually consumes slightly less power and produces slightly less heat than the 933M Ezra-T. The newer boards have a bigger heatsink with a smaller, quieter fan.
