I'm ashamed to say that about 6 weeks ago I had problem with my Gentoo desktop and, not having done a full re-install since September 2006 or thereabouts, I grabbed a Kubuntu Gutsy alpha3 cd a friend had given me at work and wiped my root partition and installed it.
I'm a 32 year old helpdesk tech who spends 2.5 hours per day on the road back and forth to work, and 9 hours per day at the office.
I just enrolled in an online university to get my B.S. in Information Technology.
I NEED my desktop to WORK.
I lasted 6 weeks with a few hiccups but today's update broke kdm on my system.
So, there I was, stuck in irssi with one console in recovery mode.
Where do I turn for help?? I hopped on freenode and joined one of their channels.
128 users and one user told me to check my xorg logs.
So, i quit irssi and check my Xorg log. Clean.
I come back. 127 users. No one answers my cry for help.
So, dear friends, I wander over to #gentoo
Not only am I promptly greeted but all my questions as to how the heck do I get back on Gentoo with my liveDVD iso sitting on my hard drive
are answered.
I love you folks.
Welcome back, me.

Yes, black magic doesn't use parentheses.

Long Live Gentoo!

You can't stay away from Gentoo long, I can't stay away from it ever. Tried Fedora for a few hours and got sick (livecd) I had to boot Gentoo back up!

We tried Kubuntu on my wife's laptop because she doesn't have the patience to compile. Several packages didn't work correctly, and her wireless didn't work. I tried making a custom kernel, but there were no development tools installed by default, and some Google searches didn't help out much. I tried posting on the forums, and asking in the chat room and no one was helpful. I finally got all the necessary libs to really start compiling, however when I booted in the custom kernel, the synaptic and ati modules wouldn't load because I didn't have a proper restricted-modules package for my kernel. I asked, and apparently this is a package Kubuntu puts out for their official kernels, and without it, the system blocks loading of an unofficial modules, such as the ATI driver.

I kept asking how to produce such a package, and I was told that I shouldn't run proprietary drivers, nevermind that there is no open source driver for the card in her laptop. I was also told I shouldn't ever attempt to touch or upgrade my kernel, because it is technical and stuff. I said that Kubuntu shipped with an older kernel, and that the newer kernel had an updated wireless stack, and the wireless card worked better, but I was told I should accept my older kernel and like it.

I was also told repeatedly that the root of all my problems was due to running a 64-bit install, and that the (K)ubuntu team didn't really support the 64-bit version, and that I needed to format and install a 32-bit version instead.

The community and official support there was truly horrid.

I've been on Debian for over a year now, because I didn't have the hardware to keep compiling stuff all the time. Why did I choose Debian? No idea, but it's been fairly good to me. Gonna come back to Gentoo now though, I finally have the means to buy myself a new system, and I've missed Gentoo badly!

At work they've been asking me to recommend a server distro, and they're considering Red Hat, CentOS, or Ubuntu. I've been trying to steer them to Debian.

Yeah Debian is a great choice. At work, we are running a lot of Unix server and all the dev server are running with Debian.

Also, one of my friends that works at Universite Laval, says that 70% of all servers are running Debian.
There is currently one server that is running Gentoo, and it's my friend that is the admin :)

If you have to do one of those three, go with CentOS.

Honestly, though, what's wrong with a Gentoo BIN_HOST?! Much easier to maintain in the long run.

Depends what they are going to use it for CentOS probably the best price || performance || binary compatibility, alot of business wouldn't consider Gentoo because there is no "Official" support. Which I think is crap but what do you expect from management.
