Hello.
Someone tried the vmware-any-any-update-112 (http://knihovny.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/)? Is it possible to use vmware workstation again on a 64 bit machine with kernel higher than 2.6.18?
Just in case i am the only one. My Virtual machines crashed hard with kernel higher than 2.6.18.
cheers

I run vmware workstation from portage on ~amd64 with gentoo 2.6.21-gentoo-r3 kernel, only problem I have is that vmware-modules won't compile on a 2.6.22 kernel. It's a know bug and should be fixed in the next vmware release iirc. |

Tried 112 because nothing else worked on 2.6.22. 112 works fine here, though I only tested it for 5 minutes. |

I can confirm this problem.
However for me 2.6.20-r8 still works fine.
vmware-modules only compiles correctly under 2.6.22 with the 112 any-update. But it still doesn't solve the problem.
My VMware seems to freeze up my IO (keyboard and mouse) but leaves the rest of my machine's processes running. The only way I can recover is to log in remotely and tell the system to reboot.
Also, it is an intermittent problem which only seems to happen with certain (network?) activity inside vmware. But it seems I can reproduce it every time by going to youtube inside my virtual machine. |

The vmware-modules problem seems to be fixed now in terms of it not emerging properly, however, I continue to have freeze-ups. I have tried to upgrade my vm but it says that it is up to date. I get the same behavior described in this thread with I/O dying. Not sure how to proceed. Fortunately, I just "play with" Solaris on vmware; I don't really need it for anything. _________________ http://www.dataswamp.net |

After upgrading my kernel among various other things I was experiencing hanging with my VM's (Vmware-server-1.0.3), I just uninstalled VMware and re-installed and everything went back to normal. Also i can confirm that vmware-modules compiles fine with vmware-any-any-update110 (haven't tested 111 or 112 but I'd assume anything newer than 110 should work fine) For those with the network problems what driver are u using? What is the Guest system? I assume the host is gentoo. _________________ Opteron 1356@2.4Ghz

As an added datapoint, if I pull the network card off of my VMs I don't see freezes.
I'm running Gentoo ~amd64 w/ the 2.6.22 kernel on a Dell E1505.

Same thing for me with amd64 and 2.6.22.
Works without network, but impossible to use with network.
This issue is recent because I use this VM for years. |

Sorry to bump this, but I can confirm this as well. I was looking into reporting it to vmware, but wasn't sure of the proper route to take in order to do that. Suggestions anyone? |

I too get a hard freeze up when I run a vmware virtual machine. Removing network adapter from Virtual machine makes no difference. I have no prblem at all running kernel 2.6.20-gentoio-r3. The problem appears with kernel 2.6.21-gentoo-rx and 2.6.22-gentoo-rx. I compile the newer kernels using make oldconfig with working 2.6.20 config as source. With kernels 2.6.21 & 22 I can bring up vmware and start booting a virtual machine but usually whole system freezes before vm completely boots up. Not even magic SysRq key will respond.
My machine:
running x86_64 smp kernel on AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200 AM2 CPU, Asrock 939 Sata2 Mobo, 3 Gigs ram, SATA2 hard drive, GeForce 7300 with 128 MB, ali15x3 chipset drivers, uli526x ethernet driver. |

same here, i have backed down to gentoo-source 2.6.16-r13 after the week long hard lockups when running vmware workstattion. i have tested many combinations of the kernels, threadlocking models, etc and this problem persists even in the vanilla kernel branch. |

I can confirm VMWare works on 2.6.19-gentoo-r5 (amd64) but hangs with linux-2.6.22-gentoo-r2. Unfortunately for me all kernels in between have buggy w83627ehf sensor implementations. |

Hi,
I'm having no problems using the vanilla kernel 2.6.22.1 from www.kernel.org on my Core2Duo using the amd64 profile. VMWare player is working great.

If you see changelog:
vmware-any-any-update113.tar.gz
Change ASSERT_ON_COMPILE to make g++ 3.4 happy.
It will not help you, unless you use gcc 3.4 |

So, the only complie problem I had with vmware was with vmxnet.
There is a fix / work around for the vmxnet compile problem on kernels >= 2.6.19.
It is described here:
http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?threadID=62836&tstart=0
It works as promised. _________________ Mark
