|
|
Somewhere down my install, I lost the grub directory (that's suppose to be in the boot partition). I did mount it... dunno where I went wrong
but i think I can backtrack appropriately if someone can tell me which part of the gentoo install dumps the appropriate files into the grub directory in boot.
The reason i'm stuck is when I enter the command in grub "setup (hd0)" it complains file not found
thanks in advance!

You have to run "root (hd0,)" before running "setup (hd0)". The root command creates the grub directory. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

tried it again but to no avail.
dunno what the deal is. When I run grub though, it does complain about some modprobe error...
so grub dumps stuff into the /boot/grub directory? because right now, there is no grub directory at all

I should also add that this is the message I receive:
grub> root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
grub> setup (hd0)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no
Checking if "/boot/stage1" exists... no
Error 15: File not found.
What is this stage1 it wants? In the meantime, i re-ran bootstrap.sh hoping that this would help.

Hmm... sounds like grub is confused. Are you running this from within the chroot-ed shell? _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

The Grub stage 1 is the first stage of the boot process, it winds up the the MBR... anyway. Try exiting the chroot-ed shell or switching terminals and see if the grub included on the CD works. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

Could it be possible that the grub files got installed into the /boot/grub directory before you mounted /boot, and so now they are masked by the /boot partition? You can manually copy all the files from /usr/share/grub/i386-pc into /boot/grub, and that will include the "stage1" file that it is bleating about, in any case. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

I'm having the same problem:
grub> root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
grub> setup (hd0)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no
Checking if "/boot/stage1" exists... no
Error 15: File not found.
Yet I can do ls /boot/grub and stage1 and other files are all there. Realy has me confused. |
