On the first post he says he has a Toshiba Tecra A8 laptop. (the latest Inspirons are ICH8 Family btw. I've gotten sound working fine on mine, except for the lack of headphone sensing ... but I'm thinking that it may be because the ALSA driver doesn't fully support it yet)
AeroIllini - just making sure, but what are you using to test if your sound is working? |

I'm running a wav file in aplay. The same file plays just fine on the WinXP side of the house. |

Hi,
I have the same problem on my lpt Compal FL90, no sound.
I have tryed the kernel built in driver, don't work.
With the alsa-driver, don't work too...
My chipset is recognized but no sound.

| What about disabling ACPI? Pass acpi=off as kernel parameters. I saw another thread where this solved the problem. |

That's a decent idea, I've seen that thread, too.
However, I already tried that earlier, with no effect. Plus, this is a laptop ... without ACPI, I'm pretty much sunk. |

I have problems too on a HP dv6575us with Intel HD.
This seems to a codec support problem for the cards. Even though they are all Intel HD, they have different codecs supported.

Try this:

I have a Realtek ID 268, and same issues. It appears that they need to patch a few files in Alsa for this to work. Patches included in the above bug reports. Although I haven't tried them myself. Btw, using gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r2 |

Those patches might be included in media-sound/alsa-driver-9999.
Hint: Use ** at end of line in /etc/portage/package.keywords, if KEYWORDS="" in ebuild. |

I've tried using the 9999 versions, and still didn't give me sound. I did get some more mixer channels, but no audio even after unmuting.
Furthermore, playing around with model types caused me to kernel panic. (3stack)
EDIT/UPDATE: https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=3165 <- My problem, codec isn't supported yet, maybe others too. |

| I haven't been able to get sound working with the newer kernels either. My backup kernels 2.6.21-r3 and previous all have working sound. Tried both the in-kernel driver and the seperate module in the newer ones. Something obviously is different with the newer kernels that some of the Intel sound controllers don't like. Both 2.6.22-r1 and r2 neither work for me. |

Ok I managed to get my sound working with a newer kernel however, it required going back to an earlier version of alsa.
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
Had to emerge the 1.0.14_rc3 version of alsa for it to work. |

Doesn't work for me. Tried 9999 and rc3 as well.

| You guys might be having a different problem than me. My card is a Realtek ALC262, not a 268. I'm not saying it *is* different, just something to keep in mind. |

i've got a similar problem trying to get my intel hda to work, slightly different though.
i was getting no sound with mplayer, so i tried all sorts of module/builtin combinations in the kernel settings, tried emerging the unstable alsa-driver/headers packages, etc. all to no avail. and now i get error messages during udev boot about improper function calls or undefined symbols or something when it loads the sound modules (which is weird because i'm using a kernel with the intel hd thing now builtin). BUT, on a whim, i plugged in my headphones, and LO AND BEHOLD, i could hear music playing.
SO, while this is probably a different problem, WHY isn't sound coming out through the main speakers instead of exclusively through the headphone jack?
also my codec is not realtek but SigmaTel STAC9228. currently i'm using the kernel builtins for alsa/intel hd. (no longer seems to work if i compile them as modules) |
