Hi.

I have HP J5000 (it has PA-8500 64bit CPU). Originally this system runs HP-UX, however I want to install Linux on it.
Gentoo supports HPPA, however I'm not sure if 64bit CPUs will work in their native mode or in 32bit mode.
I tryed to find information about this issue, but with no success.

:?: Could you tell me please if Gentoo supports HPPA in 64bit mode?

Thank you.

You probably want to join #gentoo-hppa on the Freenode IRC network, as that is where the devs will be hanging out.

Mainly depends on the amount of RAM installed in that box. You can choose between running a 64bit Kernel and 32bit Userland or a pure 32bit system, if want to use more then about ~4GB of RAM you'll need choose the 64bit Kernel/32bit Userland way.

I've successfully installed gentoo on a HP Visualize workstation (C3?00, I forgot)
However, X was a no-go, since there are no working drivers for the graphics card it has (forgot the name). I recall some HP models come with a card that is supported by Xorg, although it might still be unaccelerated, I don't know.

So if you want graphics, first do some research on graphics hardware support.

Thank you for answers.

dertobi123, I have 2G RAM on that system, is that good for 64bit Kernel?
JeroenV, I know that HPPA is supported, but I want to use advantages of 64bit system.
My graphics card is HP Visualize FX (I don't remember the index), unfortunelly it is not supported in graphics mode for now by any of other Unix/Linux system than HP Ux. However, it is not critical for me, because it will run MySQL server.

Use the 32bit Kernel, afair using the 64bit Kernel gives you no additional benefits.

I would not like to use 64bit system as 32bit one.

I tryed display adapters from PC, but J5000 can't initialize them and there is no way to put them into 64bit 3.3V 66MHZ PCI slot that is dedicated for display card.

:?: The question is: if I'll install Linux using serial console, and put supported by Gentoo (PC) display adapter, will I get GUI.
