|
|
OK heres the issue. I have Gentoo 1.2 running on an XP 2000+ w, 768 megs of ram, 333 Megs swap, Nvidia drivers (gf4) OSS pro and I mainly use Fluxbox in X.
The thing I have noticed is that after running some apps.. Mozilla, Xmms, Realplayer, Sylphead, Win4Lin (occasionally), etc.. The memory section of my top output looks something like this:
| Code: |
Mem: 775008K av, 634992K used, 140016K free, 0K shrd, 35024K buff
Swap: 345388K av, 0K used, 345388K free 458808K cached
|
The memory usage is pretty heavy, although in itself not a real problem. Whats confusing is that looking through top, the running processes do not add up, and if I shutdown all running programs, the memory in use does not decrease.
So after an hour of having only fluxbox and an xterm open I appear to be still using over 600 megs of memory. Any ideas on how I can account for the used memory? Also is there a way to "flush" the memory somehow?

That's your system's cache of block devices. Don't worry about it; use "free" to check memory usage. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

What you are seeing is automatic disk caching. When and if you have a more urgent need for the memory, the disk cache will give it up. In short - don't worry about it. Your system is behaving normally and should feel as responsive as ever. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Hey thanks guys definately did not notice any performance issues, so that makes perfect sense. Oh and here's 'free' output:
| Code: |
bash-2.05a$ free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 775008 633304 141704 0 35192 459316
-/+ buffers/cache: 138796 636212
Swap: 345388 0 345388
bash-2.05a$
